Indefinite Strike of Truck Drivers, As of July 25, Against the Increase in Fuel Prices, Does Not Intimidate Petrobras Which Made New Adjustments to the Prices of Diesel, Gasoline and LPG
Prices of gasoline, diesel, and cooking gas at sky-high levels did not prevent Petrobras from increasing fuel prices again yesterday (07/06), which hit the wallets of truck drivers and millions of Brazilians suffering due to disproportionate increases relative to current income. The new price hike that came into effect yesterday took the leadership of the National Cargo Transport Council – CNTRC by surprise, given that there had been a “positive” meeting of the entity held just a week earlier with the president of Petrobras.

In a meeting held just a week ago with Petrobras President Gen. Silva e Luna, the council was informed that its pricing policy proposal was under review by the company.
The CNTRC’s pricing policy proposal is based on substituting the Import Parity Price (IPP) with the Export Parity Price (EPP), as well as taxing crude oil exports, with the revenue used to compensate states and the Union to implement tax reductions on fuels.

Petrobras advances 4.6% with rising oil prices and the dollar, reigniting the debate on macro risks, pricing policy, and fiscal impact in Brazil.
For CNTRC leaders, it is unacceptable that Petrobras management yields to pressures from organizations such as the Brazilian Association of Fuel Importers – ABICOM. The entity argues that “there’s nothing Brazilian about it, as it serves the interests of foreign companies and the capital market, like Ativa Investimentos.”
National Cargo Transport Council Sends Official Letter to Petrobras President Requesting Repeal of Increases
Yesterday, the CNTRC sent an official letter to the president of Petrobras requesting the repeal of the increases (check the document at this link). In addition to the letter, the National Cargo Transport Council issued a press release clarifying its position, which is available at this link.
The problem is much graver than it may seem, as it does not only affect truck drivers and their families (millions of Brazilians), but tens of millions of Brazilians suffering due to disproportionate fuel increases compared to the population’s income.
“It is necessary to put an end to this situation and free Petrobras from the extortion of importers and capital market investors,” says Cláudio da Costa Oliveira, retired economist from Petrobras.
Tuesday (07/06) Begins With a Blow to Brazilians’ Wallets: Even With Prices Soaring, Petrobras Increases the Price of Gasoline, Diesel, and Cooking Gas Again
Even with gasoline, diesel, and cooking gas prices skyrocketing, the Brazilian oil company Petrobras decided to raise, starting this Tuesday (6), diesel by 10.2 cents, now costing R$ 2.81, representing an average increase of 3.8% per liter. The price of the most used fuel in the country had been frozen since May 1, for 66 days.
Gasoline delivered to distributors and cooking gas (LPG) also saw increases, further burdening household consumers. Since 2019, there has been no more price differentiation for LPG.
Gasoline rose 15.7 cents, to R$ 2.69 per liter, a rise of 6.2%. Just 22 days ago, on June 12, Petrobras had reduced prices by about 2%. On May 1, it also made a cut at the same level.
Indefinite Strike of Truck Drivers, As of July 25, Against the Increase in Fuel Prices Practiced by Petrobras
Last week, Petrobras President Joaquim Silva e Luna received the board of the National Road Cargo Transport Council (CNTRC). The association has been discussing an indefinite strike of truck drivers since last month.
“Road modal transport is very important for Brazil. Petrobras seeks to understand the actors in society, evaluates the best way to contribute to all of them, and is always open to dialogue,” Silva e Luna stated, according to a Petrobras note.
Truck Drivers’ Strike: The entire category is called by the National Road Cargo Transport Council – CNTRC, through a notice, for a halt, for an indefinite period, starting next July 25, Truck Driver’s Day (Saint Christopher). Christopher means “he who carries Christ.” Click here to read the full note released.
In 2018, Truck Drivers Promoted a Historic Strike Against the Price of Diesel
The demands of truck drivers, who staged a historic strike against diesel prices in 2018, continue to reflect constant complaints from President Bolsonaro about the cost of fuels.
In the letter sent to President Bolsonaro, CNTRC requests that the government adopt a tax on crude oil exports “as an immediate measure,” while other requests should be considered, such as ending the pursuit of import parity.
“The resources from the tax on crude oil exports could be used to compensate states and the Union in the reduction of taxes on fuels,” suggested the group of truck drivers.
Since Luna took office on April 19, Petrobras has only made one price adjustment (a rollback for gasoline and diesel), announced on April 30. The international scenario contributed, as prices had some stability.
