Engie Brazil Promises to Create 3 Thousand Jobs During the Construction Phase of Its New Wind Power Plant in Bahia. The Mega Project Will Receive Investments of R$ 6 Billion.

The Serra do Assuruá Wind Farm, a project with the capacity to generate up to 3 thousand direct and indirect jobs at the peak of construction, is being built in the town of Gentio do Ouro by Engie Brazil Energy, in Bahia.

Engie Brazil Prioritizes Local Labor

With an estimated investment of R$ 6 billion, following an environmental ordinance issued by the Bahia Institute of Environment and Water Resources (Inema), the intervention for the construction of the wind power park is currently 50% through vegetation suppression and topography and 80% through the surveying phase.

Focusing on prioritizing job creation for local professionals, the Department of Labor, Employment, Income, and Sports (Setre), through the Job Intermediation Service (SineBahia), has established a partnership agreement with Engie Brazil to conduct campaigns for worker registration, including support for Quilombola Communities and traditional pastures. The aim is to promote job generation for professionals from traditional and non-traditional communities in the influence area.

The job intermediation is handled by the Sine office in the municipality of Bahia, which, upon identifying the vacancies offered by the contracted companies, conducts prospecting, analysis, and professional forwarding for selection.

To encourage professional and social qualification in Gentio do Ouro, also in partnership with Setre, Engie Brazil supported the implementation of the Qualifica Bahia Program, providing 60 free spots for courses in versatile masonry, carpentry, and reinforced concrete structure formwork.

With theoretical and practical classes on the construction site, half of the jobs were reserved for women. With a certification of 120 hours, the target audience for the course included low-income and low-education individuals, economically and socially vulnerable, and subject to discrimination.

Wind Power Plant Will Contribute to the Supply of Clean Energy in the National Matrix

Qualifica Bahia Program in Gentio do Ouro, Paulo Muller, implantation manager for the project, stated that Setre is a strategic partner providing essential support for these initiatives.

In addition to this, other actions are being developed, including specific courses for training professionals who can also work in the operation and maintenance of wind turbines, an activity that will be carried out for at least 20 years, strengthening Engie Brazil’s commitment to Bahia.

According to Muller, the wind power plant, which will create thousands of new jobs, will contribute to expanding the supply of renewable energy in the Brazilian matrix, boosting the energy transition, one of the pillars of Engie Brazil’s operations.

According to Muller, the project will create jobs in the region, increase revenue in the municipality of Gentio do Ouro and in the State of Bahia through the collection of taxes generated by the wind farm. According to the manager, the implementation of social projects from private social investment has already been authorized by the company.

The project will be developed in a single phase, with an installed capacity of 846 MW, in 24 wind power parks with 188 wind turbines. It will also include 28 km of transmission lines connecting the park to the National Interconnected System, allowing the energy generated on-site to be directed to the whole of Brazil.

The estimated commercial operation start is in the second half of 2024. With machines rated at 4.5 MW and wind turbines reaching 165 meters in height, the generated energy will be directed to the Free Energy Market, a contracting environment where companies can purchase energy directly from producers and choose the generation source.
