The First Flying Motorcycle In The World, The Revolutionary XTURISMO, Has Just Been Launched In Japan And Is Available For About R$ 3 Million. Will This Innovation Transform The Future Of Transportation?

A revolution in urban mobility has been announced in Japan: the first flying motorcycle in the world has just been officially launched on the market. The XTURISMO, a 3.6-meter-long vehicle inspired by the Star Wars universe, is available for about US$ 555 thousand (approximately R$ 3 million). Developed by the aircraft company AERWINS, the novelty promises to transform the concept of personal transportation, offering a futuristic and impressive experience.

Flying Motorcycle Can Reach Speeds Of Up To 100 Km/h

The 300 kg vehicle, which was a finalist in the Edison Awards last year, is powered by two large central rotors driven by a 228-horsepower Kawasaki gas engine. The flying motorcycle also features an electric battery that powers four fans on the edges, ensuring stability during flight.

Announced as a true realization of the dream of aerial mobility, the XTURISMO can reach speeds between 80 and 100 km/h. The official description does not hold back on promises: “Bring science fiction to real life and dominate the skies with the first flying motorcycle in the world. Expand your ideas about transportation, experience the world like never before. Be a pioneer in the next generation of transportation. The XTURISMO was developed with that in mind. A new journey begins.”

YouTube video

Visually, the first flying motorcycle in the world resembles the speeder bikes used by the Galactic Empire to chase Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) through the forests of the planet Endor in the sixth installment of the franchise, “Return of the Jedi,” from 1983.

In June 2022, AERWINS announced the global launch of the XTURISMO Limited Edition at the Top Marques Monaco conference in December, and its performance at the Detroit Auto Show in September was well received worldwide, according to brand representatives who claimed they are “currently receiving orders and inquiries from all over the world.”

Unfortunately, “Star Wars” fans dreaming of their own intergalactic chases will have to wait a little longer. For now, the flying motorcycle is only available in Japan and is limited to closed racetrack testing.

XTURISMO Can Be Used To Assist In Rescue Operations

Much beyond use by sports enthusiasts, fans, and hobbyists, the first flying motorcycle in the world, considered one of the 19 most incredible scientific innovations of 2022 by BBC Science, has the potential to be used in rescue operations, disaster assistance, and infrastructure inspections, according to its creators. A promotional video of the XTURISMO Limited Edition shows the vehicle hovering over the waters of Lake Yamanaka, with the iconic Mount Fuji in the background.

According to the brand’s representatives in a statement, by publishing this video, the expectation is that viewers are moved by the natural beauty of Yamanashi and feel the anticipation and excitement of future mobility that can be achieved through technological capabilities.

It is important to mention that ALI Technologies Inc., based in Tokyo, opened capital last year through a merger with Pono Capital Corp. Under the terms of the agreement, ALI Technologies will become a wholly-owned unit of its American arm, Awerwins Technologies. The expectation is that its market value will be at least US$ 600 million, in line with its target last year, despite a market downturn. Its ticker will be AWIN, according to reports.

Pono Capital’s shares rose 24% after the Bloomberg report, the largest gain since the SPAC went public in 2021. A company representative stated that, although a SPAC listing is underway, details still need to be defined. Initially, ALI Technologies considered doing an initial public offering in Japan but decided to list on Nasdaq through a SPAC deal to expedite the process, as a domestic listing could take much longer.

Other Companies Are Working On Flying Motorcycles

In addition to AERWINS’ first flying motorcycle, another company has developed the Jetpack Speeder, a model of flying motorcycle that began being sold in the USA for R$ 380 thousand even before it was ready. The prototypes shown indicate two ways of movement for this model.

In the case of the Speeder, propulsion is provided by jet engines, while other models, such as the flying motorcycle of the Dubai police, use propellers. One point that has yet to be defined is how these flying motorcycles will be in the future, whether they will have effective wheels and be able to have hybrid use, flying and driving on roads, as some flying cars do.

It is also unclear what the regulations will be for these vehicles to operate. In the case of this model, for example, the pilot will have to undergo training and have special licensing. Currently, there are only projections of how the Speeder will fly, however, the model was the first to begin being effectively sold. In a pre-sale system, the vehicle will have a top speed of 240 km/h and can reach heights of 4,500 meters.

Its price is US$ 380 thousand, equivalent to R$ 1.5 million, requiring a US$ 10 thousand deposit to reserve one of the 20 units that will be manufactured. Made by an American company specializing in “jetpacks,” the motorcycle also uses these propellers to take flight. Another model of flying motorcycle was being tested by the Dubai police for street monitoring.

Called Hoversurf S3, the model is developed by Russians who are now based in California. Weighing about 114 kg, lighter than a Honda CG 160, the electric model performs flights of up to 5 meters in height and reaches a maximum speed of 96 km/h. The flying vehicle performs most of its movements autonomously, meaning it can land, take off, and hover in the air. When taking control, the pilot uses a joystick to operate it.
