The First F39 Gripen Fighter Is Being Assembled at Embraer, Marking the Partnership Between Swedish Manufacturer Saab and the Brazilian Company in the Production of Fourth Generation Aircraft for the Brazilian Air Force.

Saab, the renowned Swedish aircraft manufacturer, is showcasing the first F39 Gripen fighter being assembled at Embraer. This event marks an important step in the partnership between the two companies and a historic moment for the Brazilian Air Force .

The F39 Gripen is a fourth generation aircraft, designed to meet the operational needs of the Brazilian Air Force (FAB). On May 9, 2023, Saab do Brasil shared an image of the first F39 Gripen being assembled on the production line at Embraer, located in Gavião Peixoto, SP. This is the first Gripen produced outside of Sweden and will be destined for the FAB.

The Line Will Be Responsible for the Production of 15 Units for the Brazilian Air Force

Saab’s social media post celebrates the opening of the F39 Gripen assembly line, highlighting that it is the only one outside of Sweden and the first in Latin America to manufacture supersonic fighters. The line will be responsible for the production of 15 units for the Brazilian Air Force, in addition to being able to meet future demands from Brazil or the region.

In 2014, when signing the purchase of 36 Gripens (28 F39E and 8 F39F two-seaters), the FAB also secured a comprehensive technology transfer package for the national defense industry. The production of aircraft in Brazil was a key part of this contract.

FAB Has Already Received Eight F39 Gripen

In addition to hosting the assembly line, Embraer’s facilities in Gavião Peixoto also house the Gripen Flight Test Center (Gripen Flight Test Center – GFTC) and the Gripen Design and Development Network (Gripen Design and Development Network – GDDN). The latter is described by Saab as the central point of technology transfer for the Brazilian Gripen program, integrating companies, government agencies, and partners involved in the program, especially Embraer.

So far, the Brazilian Air Force has received eight F39 Gripen fighters, with seven operational aircraft (FAB 4100 to 4107) and one unit dedicated to testing and certifications. The delivery of the first Gripen assembled in Brazil is expected in 2025, marking a significant advance in the country’s defense capabilities and aerospace industry.
