Salary Improvements and Working Conditions Are Among the Demands of Offshore Workers at Petrobras and Other Oil Companies

In recent days, the CPG portal has been receiving news about a possible strike by professionals working in the Catering or Offshore Hospitality segment and maritime units, particularly those of Petrobras, aimed at oil and gas operations, which is expected to occur on May 30 (Thursday).

For those working on board, they understand that all functions on board are extremely essential for the operation of the platform, regardless of the level of education, training, or technical knowledge of the professional.

It’s just speculation (forgive us), but the problem seems to be precisely this! In general, offshore hospitality professionals do not need to complete a technical or higher education course to work on board (except for exceptions), just a vocational course, such as one from SENAC, for example, which is already sufficient to qualify them for boarding. Due to this “ease”, there are companies that pay extremely low salaries to their employees in this area.

Even though professionals on board such as captains, engineers, and the production and completion crew perform roles of high complexity, justifying their salaries above R$10,000, often even more than that, without offshore hospitality, this will be worthless dozens/hundreds of kilometers offshore, because they need the same hospitality service.

Think about it: Everyone needs to eat, have clothes and uniforms cleaned, organized and clean cabins… It is impossible to perform any offshore activity without these professionals. Given this information, let’s get to the heart of the matter, and remember: ALL INFORMATION CAME FROM DOZENS OF PROFESSIONALS WHO ARE GOING THROUGH THE SAME SITUATION, THEY ARE NOT DELIBERATE WORDS FROM CPG CLICK PETROLEUM AND GAS.

The Main Complaints and Demands for Improvements in Offshore Hospitality Are Based on the Following Topics:

  • Low Salary
  • Low Food Allowance
  • Transport
  • Threats On Board
  • Stewards
  • Nurses
  • Expired Food
  • Psychological Terror

Low Salaries – Surprisingly (even we were surprised), there are professionals earning around R$ 1,400 + 50% bonuses, which amounts to around R$ 1,900 monthly. There are also companies that pay a food ticket of R$ 250. Extremely low compared to before, in a market that used to pay over R$ 3,000 monthly, depending on the company.

Health Plan – When it comes to health plans, some companies provide it while others do not. When they do, not all extend the coverage to the worker’s family members.

Transport – There are reports of delays in transport payments, causing professionals to be stranded at the bus station waiting to return home, yet without the means to pay for the fare. Staff often find themselves at the airport hungry. Some people leave home with just enough money to get to the airport.

Threats On Board – This includes moral harassment from the management unit by stewards and nurses. Stewards are accused of treating their subordinates disrespectfully, ignoring their efforts and responding with utter ignorance, in addition to abusing the power they possess. Workers report that they do not have the right to fall ill and are subjected to excessive pressure, without proper recognition of their efforts. When they attempt to communicate with the company, they face significant delays in responses, which can take up to fifteen days. Supply shortages are a constant issue, and when provisions are delivered, they are often insufficient, lasting only three or four days. Additionally, there are reports that they are required to perform perfect work without the necessary materials or personal protective equipment for the job.

Expired Food – We have received recorded videos of spoiled and expired food. There is no way to keep a crew healthy and capable of performing their occupational duties with a real risk of food poisoning.

Unions Decide to Address the Demands of Offshore Hospitality Oil Workers

Upon noticing the intense engagement in support of these demands on CPG channels, WhatsApp Groups, and Instagram, Sindipetro NF decided to intervene on behalf of the workers. Watch the following video:

Exclusive sources revealed that Petrobras is already prepared to face a potential strike by workers. According to obtained information, the companies operating on Petrobras’ platforms are aware of the employees’ movements.

To minimize potential impacts on their operations, Petrobras may plan a contingency strategy to mitigate interruptions. “Should a strike occur and operations be halted, the plan B is already defined: disembark all involved staff and replace them with a new team,” details the source.
