Launched Globally by the Global Road Safety Partnership, Michelin Foundation and TotalEnergies Foundation, Program is Being Implemented in the Country by Junior Achievement
The Global Road Safety Education Program for a New Generation, known as VIA, has just arrived in Brazil. Between May and October, students from public and private schools in five capitals will receive the innovative learning methodology that has been implemented since 2019 in 29 countries and aims to raise awareness among young people about behaviors related to road and street accident risks. The forecast is to reach approximately 8,300 students, from 8th and 9th grades of Elementary School to the 1st year of High School.
Launched in 2019 by the Global Road Safety Partnership and the Michelin and TotalEnergies Foundations, the program is being implemented in Brazil by the non-governmental organization Junior Achievement. Over 180,000 students from 875 schools worldwide have already participated in the initiative, receiving an average of eight hours of structured training in traffic education.
The implementation in Brazilian classrooms began in May, in attention to the Yellow May campaign, which aims to raise awareness in society for safer traffic, and actions will continue until October. Registrations can be made this month by directors and managers of public and private schools in the cities of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Salvador, and Goiânia.

According to Brenda Santos, Operations Director of Junior Achievement Brazil, the VIA project will have the entire structure of the organization as support for articulation. “We offer students an innovative approach to raising awareness about traffic risks through active, emotional, and creative methods, in order to reduce accidents among young people,” she evaluates.
For Charles Fernandes, Country Chair of TotalEnergies in Brazil, the project stimulates collective engagement and awareness for safer traffic. “TotalEnergies is committed to safe mobility, and this is one of our priority areas in the social responsibility initiatives we carry out worldwide. With VIA, we are paving a path of education and awareness for the drivers of tomorrow,” he reinforces.
Feliciano Almeida, CEO of Michelin South America, highlights that this initiative in schools plays an important social role in developing critical thinking, creativity, and a sense of belonging among students. “It is essential to think about tomorrow. Therefore, being part of this initiative and contributing to raising awareness among young people about such an important issue for society makes us very proud and happy. For over 130 years, safety has been a priority for Michelin, guiding us towards an increasingly sustainable future.”
Every year, traffic accidents interrupt the lives of more than 1.35 million people worldwide and cause injuries to over 50 million individuals. Children and young people are the most affected, as disasters caused by risky behaviors on roads and streets currently represent the leading cause of death in the age group of 5 to 29 years.
Meet the Program Methodology
VIA develops, through videos, games, and other educational materials, four key competencies with students: Risk Competency, which aims to alert about potential traffic risks, guiding how to act and react safely to minimize risks on roads and streets; Safe Mobility Competency, which highlights traffic rules and practical notions of road safety; Transport Skills, aimed at raising students’ awareness of risky behaviors in traffic, both for pedestrians and for drivers of different means of transportation (bicycles, public transport, etc.); and Social Competency to stimulate attention to others during the journey, teaching how to establish communication with other people in traffic.
