This week, Brazil took a step towards an electric future. The Senate approved the creation of the Mixed Parliamentary Front for Electromobility. The PRS (Resolution Project) 64/2021, created by Senator Rodrigo Cunha, aims to discuss initiatives to promote the use of electric cars in Brazil.

According to the senator, as a cheap, quick, and non-polluting alternative, the use of electric cars will be able to transform the lives of citizens in a municipality, directly or indirectly. According to the author of the project, electromobility is essential to change the chaotic reality of municipalities in Brazil.

Other senators are expressing support for the project, such as Izalci Lucas, a senator from PSDB-DF, who admitted that Brazil is behind in the use of electric cars, since, in his perspective, within a few years, a large part of the world population will own electric cars.

“Brazil needs to find solutions to replace combustion engines and develop electric propulsion technologies that allow for the efficient use of the energy sources we have available. Otherwise, we risk making our automotive industry unviable. We need to start discussing the technology we are going to develop or use, what standards will be adopted, or how we will adapt energy distributors to meet this new demand.”

For Senator Rodrigo Cunha, due to the fact that the electric car does not emit polluting gases, it benefits the health of the population, and therefore, its use in Brazil becomes even more urgent. According to the author of the project, in terms of quality of life, the use of electric cars means lower rates of respiratory diseases caused by pollution, which, according to the Ministry of Health, have increased by more than 14% in the last decade.

According to Canaltech, the next step for the Mixed Parliamentary Front for Electromobility is to await the promulgation of the matter, and after that, the deputies and senators involved in the project will meet to create alternatives to facilitate the adoption of the electric car for Brazilians.

Brazilian Association of Electric Vehicles Celebrates Approval of the Project

The Brazilian Association of Electric Vehicles (ABVE) was pleased with the approval of the project. Adalberto Maluf, president of ABVE, stated that the Mixed Parliamentary Front for Electromobility is extremely important for the country. “It is the National Congress integrating into the global debate on transportation and renewable energies,” said the president. He also mentioned that 80% of electricity generation in Brazil is produced sustainably and that the country has the largest biofuels industry.

Adalberto Maluf believes that the role of the Parliamentary Front will be essential to help Brazil lead once again the low-emission transport policies, in which it was a global leader for three decades.

What Is the Cost of Maintaining an Electric Car in Brazil in 2022?

One of the most noteworthy points is certainly the cost of recharges. Electric cars use battery motors, so the batteries need to be recharged.

In this sense, we will start with the fact that the price of gasoline is approximately R$ 6 per liter. Thus, for a person to fill the tank of their vehicle, they would have to pay around R$ 300. Now, when we talk about a person who owns an electric car, we are talking about a cost of approximately R$ 23 for a complete battery recharge.
