Noronha Verde Project Aims to Decarbonize Fernando de Noronha, Achieving 85% Renewable Generation with Photovoltaic Energy and Batteries.

In order to promote a significant energy transition in Fernando de Noronha, a new project has been authorized by the Ministry of Mines and Energy. This project, led by Neoenergia, aims to transform the energy matrix of the archipelago, significantly increasing the participation of renewable sources in local generation. With an estimated investment of R$ 300 million, the initiative seeks to ensure that a substantial portion of the island’s energy is clean and sustainable.

The established goal prioritizes decarbonization, aiming to achieve up to 85% generation through alternative sources, such as photovoltaic energy combined with modern batteries. This energy transition represents a fundamental step in the commitment to reduce pollutant gas emissions and support more sustainable practices. The project not only highlights Fernando de Noronha in the renewable energy scene but also serves as a model for future similar initiatives in other regions.

Expansion of Clean Energy Generation in Fernando de Noronha

This Friday (1st), a decree was published authorizing Neoenergia Pernambuco to expand the capacity of renewable generation in Fernando de Noronha. This expansion will occur through photovoltaic energy combined with battery storage. The project, called Noronha Verde, aims to achieve up to 85% decarbonization of the archipelago, which currently relies mainly on diesel for its energy supply. The intention is to make Fernando de Noronha the first inhabited island in Latin America to reach this level of decarbonization, which would be a milestone in the energy transition in the region. This action is a significant example of the energy transition as it promotes the replacement of fossil fuel use with cleaner and more sustainable alternatives.

Positive Economic and Environmental Impacts

The Noronha Verde initiative will also bring significant economic benefits. By reducing dependence on polluting fossil fuels such as diesel, it will be possible to decrease charges and subsidies inherent to energy derived from these fuels, minimizing the financial burden currently borne by all Brazilians through the Fuel Consumption Account (CCC). The expectation is that the project will be operational by early 2027, with investments estimated at around R$ 300 million. This ambitious initiative, a partnership between the Federal Government through the Ministry of Mines and Energy, and the State Government of Pernambuco, will be supervised by CPRH, with support from ICMBio. After the publication of the decree, Neoenergia has 30 days to submit an investment plan.

Strengthening Renewable Sources and Sustainability

Alexandre Silveira, Minister of Mines and Energy, highlighted the strategic importance of the project for promoting the energy transition in this important Brazilian ecological heritage. ‘We are taking a significant step to make Fernando de Noronha even greener, strengthening our determination to decarbonize the island and expand the role of renewable sources in Brazil,’ said the minister. Neoenergia’s CEO, Eduardo Capelastegui, also emphasized the impacts of this initiative, not only for the island but for the entire Brazilian electric sector. According to him, the project enables the integration of sustainable solutions in an isolated system, exemplified by Fernando de Noronha, which is recognized by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage Site.

Commitment to Sustainability and Efficiency

In addition to the environmental benefits, increased renewable generation will help reduce the burden of charges and subsidies associated with energy generated from fossil fuel. In line with this vision, the project plans to install a hybrid solar photovoltaic plant along with a battery bank. The initiative also includes actions for energy efficiency, aiming to raise awareness among the population about the efficient and sustainable use of electricity on the island, thus promoting sustainability and quality energy distribution. ‘Fernando de Noronha is a valuable asset of Brazil. We are now beginning this energy transition, which is vital for its preservation,’ emphasized Priscila Krause, acting governor of Pernambuco.

Strengthening the New Economy and Social Justice

The Government of Pernambuco is committed to a strategic vision for the energy transition, investing since the beginning of its administration in strengthening renewable sources. This commitment aligns with concepts of a new economy and aims to ensure that the transition is sustainable, efficient, and promotes social justice and climate. The Noronha Verde project is an expression of this commitment and a relevant step toward responsible sustainability and governance. Neoenergia, in turn, is a publicly traded company that is part of the Spanish group Iberdrola, operating in Brazil since 1997.

Neoenergia and Its Commitment to Sustainability

Neoenergia is one of the leaders in the Brazilian electric sector, operating in 18 states and the Federal District, with businesses that encompass generation, transmission, distribution, and commercialization of energy. Its distributors, including Neoenergia Coelba, Neoenergia Pernambuco, Neoenergia Cosern, Neoenergia Elektro, and Neoenergia Brasília, serve more than 16.6 million customers, corresponding to a population of over 37 million people. With 3.9 GW of installed capacity in generation, of which 88% is from renewable sources, Neoenergia promotes sustainable development through the Neoenergia Institute, dedicating itself to socio-environmental actions to improve the quality of life in vulnerable communities, always focusing on sustainable development. As part of its commitment, the company supports Brazilian women’s football teams and has been part of the Business Sustainability Index of B3 since January 2021.
