Driver Monitored by Four Cameras Faced Bold Action in Serra do Mar at Strategic Section Linking to Port of Santos, and Police Reacted in Less Than 20 Minutes
Rain, wet road, and reduced visibility. Even so, the truck driver proceeded cautiously along the Anchieta Highway, in the mountain stretch, the main link to the Port of Santos. He had already traveled more than 600 km since leaving Uberlândia, in Minas Gerais, and was near his final destination, in Praia Grande, on the coast of São Paulo.
Alone in the cabin, the professional drove at a steady pace while four cameras recorded every detail of the trip. Moreover, the images were transmitted in real-time to the carrier responsible for monitoring the cargo. However, shortly after 9 am, something began to catch his attention.
Through the rearview mirror, he noticed a small white truck overtaking him. Right behind were a black car, another white car, a van, and two more small trucks. Soon, they all aligned behind him as if forming a convoy.

Suspicious Convoy and Strategic Blockage in the Tunnel
The driver grabbed a pen, as if jotting down information, and kept his focus on the suspicious vehicles. While trucks, buses, and ordinary cars were overtaking normally, that specific group remained positioned behind him. This situation lasted nearly four minutes.
Then, the black car began to flash its headlights insistently. Shortly after, one of the trucks from the convoy left the formation and overtook him. At the same time, the other vehicles filled both lanes of the highway and entered the tunnel.
It was then that the criminal action became evident.
The truck that had overtaken began to drive in a zigzag manner. In a matter of seconds, it braked abruptly in front of the cargo vehicle. The black car blocked the other lane, preventing any escape route. Even trying to flee, the driver only managed to lightly bump one of the gang’s cars.
Armed men announced the robbery from inside two vehicles. With no alternative, the driver raised his hands and surrendered. Under threat, he was forced to follow the black car. Through the sunroof, an armed man kept the driver in constant aim.
In the midst of the Serra do Mar, the criminals ordered him to enter a side road. The truck was large, and the maneuver required careful handling in the middle of the track. One detail caught his attention: during this moment, no other vehicle passed by, even though more than 12,000 vehicles circulate daily on the Anchieta Highway.
According to the police, the gang likely blocked the tunnel, completely halting traffic to ensure the execution of the plan.
Million-Dollar Cargo and Quick Response from the Police
The truck drove down a service road used only for maintenance of the lanes. Still under threat, the driver drove for nearly 10 minutes, following the criminals’ instructions until he reached the exact point where he had to stop.
The target was a load of cigarettes valued at over R$ millions.
Inside the cabin, the driver tried to tamper with the recording system. However, the criminals forced him to turn off all security equipment. The cameras stopped recording images.
Fortunately, the Highway Police had already been alerted.
In just over 20 minutes, PM teams arrived at the scene. The officers parked the patrol car at the roadside and advanced on foot through the densely forested area. As they approached, they found the truck and the gang’s vehicles.
The criminals reacted and began firing shots at the highway police. Under pressure, part of the group tried to escape into the woods. However, the agents were well-acquainted with the area and surrounded the suspects.
Most of the gang was arrested. Three suspects, according to the PM, engaged in an armed confrontation and died in the woods. Additionally, the entire cargo was recovered.
Shortly before the police arrived, the criminals had taken the driver hostage. However, they released the victim two hours later.
Criminal Structure and Insider Information
The investigation revealed that the operation had a complex structure. In total, 17 suspects are in custody, including a former employee of the cigarette manufacturer being transported. However, the total number of those involved may exceed 30 criminals.
According to the police, the group had insider information about the departure of the cargo, the quantity being transported, and the estimated value. Furthermore, they knew that the truck used a tracker and therefore brought equipment to inhibit the signal.
This information was disclosed by the program “Fantástico,” which had already shown, in June of last year, that the transportation company conducts seminars to guide drivers on how to act in risky situations. According to the company, the main objective has always been to protect the driver’s physical integrity.
The company’s intelligence center identified unusual behavior in the vehicle’s operation and immediately notified the authorities. This agility was decisive for the outcome of the incident.
The driver, still shaken, reported that the criminals considered setting the truck on fire but didn’t have time. “It was a moment of great tension. There was nothing else to do, just to stay calm so that everything would end as well as possible,” he declared.
