The Crime That Occurred in Europe Is Being Considered One of the Most Impactful in the European Copper Industry and Leaves Employees in “Hot Water”
In one of the boldest and most impactful heists in the European industry, criminals managed to steal approximately 185 million euros (equivalent to about US$ 198 million) in copper from the Aurubis stock, the largest copper producer in Europe. This audacious crime may have involved company employees and left the German mining giant in shock, according to CNN.
The epic-scale theft in Europe occurred after Aurubis had collected an extraordinary stock of copper at the end of August. The German company discovered that it had paid inflated prices for scrap shipments based on samples that had been manipulated to show a copper content much higher than it actually was.
This adulterated stock revealed the scale of the thefts that the company had already disclosed on August 31 and earlier, in June. The losses resulting from the theft forced Aurubis to significantly reduce its profit forecast before taxes for the current fiscal year, decreasing by about 170 million euros (equivalent to US$ 182 million).

Investigation of the Theft Ongoing in Europe
In early June, Aurubis had already announced that it had identified “criminal activities” related to copper, and both the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Hamburg police, where Aurubis is based, were conducting investigations. This included an analysis of current and former employees of Aurubis, as well as individuals employed by other companies operating on site.
According to Aurubis, the company in Europe has been fully cooperating with authorities over the past few years. Some suspects have been detained, but the investigation is still ongoing. Currently, authorities are assessing whether the same criminals are behind the previous thefts and the heist reported in August.
The State Criminal Investigation Department of Hamburg is leading the investigation, but so far, it has not been possible to establish a definitive link between the previous thefts and the most recent one at Aurubis.
The Importance of Copper in Europe
Aurubis is a giant in copper production, manufacturing approximately 1.1 million tons of “cathodes” of copper annually in factories in Europe and the United States. It is responsible for about 30% of Europe’s production of this type of copper and contributes 3% to 5% of the global output.
Copper plays a vital role in various industries, including construction, where it is used in electrical wiring and water pipes. Additionally, copper is an essential metal in the transition to cleaner energy sources, being used in wind turbines, solar panels, and electric vehicles.
However, this bold copper theft in Europe raises serious concerns about the security and protection of stockpiles of critical resources in a world where the demand for metals like copper continues to grow, especially in the pursuit of sustainable energy sources and clean technologies.
