With Duplications, Intelligent Tolls, and Charging Stations for Electric Cars, the Modernization of BR-101 in Espírito Santo Promises to Transform National Logistics, Attract Investments, and Generate Thousands of Jobs, Redrawing the Map of Road and Port Transportation in Brazil.
The resumption of works on BR-101 in Espírito Santo could mean a billion-dollar investment of R$ 10 billion and generate over 3,000 jobs per year over the next five years.
The project, approved in a contract renegotiation by the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU), includes duplications, bypasses, pedestrian walkways, and modernization of tolls — but still depends on an auction at B3 in São Paulo scheduled for June 26.
During the panel “Espírito Santo: The New Logistics Hub of Brazil” at Modal Expo in Carapina (Serra), the president of Ecovias 101, Roberto Amorim Junior, detailed the planned phases.

Germany proposes silent propellers to solve a centuries-old problem: the damage caused in the ocean by ship noise.
For him, the resumption of works represents a virtuous cycle of direct and indirect jobs, with consistent impacts on the regional economy.
The new contract also brings significant changes in tariffs: they will be differentiated for single-lane, dual-lane, and electronic toll users.
Motorcyclists will be exempt, as explained by Amorim. Another highlight is the expansion of chargers for electric vehicles. Currently, only six of the twelve operational bases have charging points.
The goal is that all of them will have this infrastructure by the end of 2025.
Modernization of BR-101 and Sustainable Mobility
By incorporating electronic tolls, the new model facilitates traffic and reduces queues at toll plazas.
As a result, in addition to improving flow on the highways, it reduces waiting times and logistics costs for drivers and carriers.
The exemption for motorcyclists aims to increase access without compromising the system’s financial balance.
In environmental terms, the installation of more electric vehicle chargers complements the transition to less polluting mobility.
This trend reinforces Espírito Santo’s role in advancing sustainable solutions in the road sector.
Investments in the Rail Corridor and National Logistics
In the rail sector, Fábio Marchiori, president of VLI Logistics, highlighted that the corridor passing through Espírito Santo has received about R$ 900 million annually.
Of this total, R$ 500 million is invested in the Centro Atlântica Railway (FCA) and another R$ 300 million goes to the Vitória a Minas Railway (EFVM), operated by Vale.
Additionally, R$ 400 million is allocated for new equipment such as locomotives and wagons.
This infrastructure has been essential for transporting soluble cellulose from Mato Grosso to the Capixaba coast, whose demand has grown in the last 18 months.
With the increase in national production, the trend is for this flow to continue expanding.
Marchiori also indicated that new routes are being evaluated, focusing on expanding operations beyond the Port of Tubarão.
Projects for a connection with the future Imetame port and facilities of Vports are among the paths under study.

Espírito Santo as a New Logistics Hub
According to Gustavo Serrão, CEO of Vports, Espírito Santo is strategically positioned to become a viable logistics alternative against the traditional axes of Santos and Rio de Janeiro.
For him, the growing demand requires new routes and operational centers, and the state has the infrastructure and location to accommodate this expansion.
Three projects stand out in Northern Espírito Santo: Portocel, the Imetame Port — with imminent inauguration — and the Barra do Riacho unit, which is awaiting licensing expected for 2026.
In the capital and Vila Velha, the shift to private management has attracted 14 partnerships.
These collaborations facilitated investments of R$ 600 million, divided between Vports and its commercial partners.
Economic and Social Impact of the Works
The annual generation of over 3,000 jobs will have positive effects on various sectors, including commerce, services, and construction.
In terms of infrastructure, the duplication of lanes and construction of bypasses will help reduce traffic jams and accidents.
Regarding sustainability, technological improvements and incentives for fleet electrification align with decarbonization goals.
From a national perspective, Espírito Santo could emerge as a new logistics axis, redistributing goods flow and alleviating the burden on Southeast ports.
Pending Challenges for BR-101 in Espírito Santo
Despite the TCU’s approval, the progress of the project still depends on the conclusion of the auction at B3 on June 26, 2025.
This process will define the responsible concessionaire, execution timelines, and operational details of the contract.
The ability to attract investors and the efficiency of the works will be crucial to meet the schedule and deliver the expected benefits.
Espírito Santo is facing a rare opportunity to reposition itself as a national reference in infrastructure.
In the Brazilian context, where there is a notable deficit of duplicated highways — currently about 10,000 km across the country — the reformed BR-101 highway could be a central piece in logistical integration.
Do you believe this investment package will be sufficient to transform Espírito Santo into a new logistics hub for Brazil?
How will these changes affect your routine — whether in traffic, employment, or the environment?
