The latest updates on the construction of the Bioceanic Bridge between Brazil and Paraguay. Construction of the Bioceanic Bridge is progressing and promises to transform the Bioceanic Route.

The mega construction of the Bioceanic Bridge that connects Porto Murtinho (Brazil) to Carmelo Peralta (Paraguay) is already 63% complete and is advancing as a key piece for the inauguration of the so-called Bioceanic Route, a project that unites Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina and Chile.

With 1.294 meters in length, including a 350-meter free span cable-stayed over the River Paraguay, the Bioceanic Bridge will go far beyond joining two countries. It will be a strategic milestone, reducing costs and optimizing exports to the Asian market, consolidating integration in Mercosur.

Progress of the works on the Bioceanic Bridge

Currently, the access sections and precast structures on the Paraguayan side have been completed for the Bioceanic Bridge. On the Brazilian side, the construction of the masts is progressing at a fast pace, with the next stages focused on assembling the steel cables for the cable-stayed section. The expectation is that the Brazilian side will soon reach the same progress as Paraguay, ensuring structural balance.

The strategy of using sand dredged from the Paraguay River to build access ramps demonstrates a practical and sustainable solution. On the Paraguayan side, this stage has already been completed. In Brazil, construction work on this phase has not yet begun, but should be carried out in the next updates.

Economic impact and regional integration

The Bioceanic Bridge is financed by Itaipu Binacional on the Paraguayan side, with a total estimated cost of R$575 million. The complementary works in Brazil, such as the access roads and customs structures in Porto Murtinho, are budgeted at R$472 million and will be delivered by 2027, one year after the bridge is completed. This scenario reflects the challenge of synchronizing major infrastructure works, but does not diminish the transformative impact of the project.

Inauguration of the Bioceanic Route

The completion of the Bioceanic Bridge marks a decisive step towards the long-awaited inauguration of the Bioceanic Route. This route promises not only to economically integrate the four Mercosur countries, but also to transform the export and import chains, benefiting strategic sectors such as agribusiness, meat and minerals.

Forecast and challenges

Scheduled for completion in the first half of 2026, the Bioceanic Bridge will be a milestone in connectivity in South America. However, delays in access works in Brazil could create temporary logistical challenges, as occurred with the Integration Bridge, which became unusable due to a lack of connecting roads. Even so, optimism remains: the bridge is the symbol of a new era of regional integration.

Now we just have to wait and follow the next updates of this project that will redefine borders and transform the trade flow of Mercosur and the Asian market.
