Raízen’s Total Production Capacity of Second-Generation Ethanol Reached an Impressive Mark of 114 Million Liters Per Year!
Raízen, one of the largest companies in the sugar-energy sector in Brazil, has just taken a monumental step in the world of ethanol production. The company announced on October 5th the start of operations at the Bonfim Bioenergy Park, the largest second-generation ethanol plant, also known as 2G ethanol, in the world.
With a considerable investment of R$ 1.2 billion, this new plant, located in the city of Guariba, São Paulo, has the capacity to produce an incredible 82 million liters of ethanol per year. This is a significant milestone for Raízen and for the biofuels industry, with the potential to revolutionize clean energy production in Brazil and worldwide.

Raízen Has Ambitious Plans for the Future and Will Have 4 Plants
Raízen is already a prominent figure in the ethanol industry, with its first 2G plant located at the Costa Pinto Bioenergy Park in Piracicaba (SP). This plant has been in operation since the 2014-2015 harvest, demonstrating the company’s expertise in this field. With the inauguration of the Bonfim Bioenergy Park, Raízen’s total production capacity of second-generation ethanol reached the impressive mark of 114 million liters per year.

With 160,000 m² of collectors, an area larger than 20 football fields, Silkeborg, in Denmark, hosts a solar thermal plant that heats 19,500 homes and could become the largest solar heating plant in the world.
Raízen has ambitious plans for the future. In addition to the two plants already in operation, the company plans to install two new plants, which will be added to the Univalem bioenergy parks in Valparaíso (SP) and Barra in Barra Bonita (SP). With estimated investments of approximately R$ 2 billion, each of these plants will have the same production capacity of 82,000 m³ of ethanol per year, totaling an annual addition of about 164 million liters of biofuel. This will position Raízen as the only producer in the world to operate four cellulose ethanol plants at an industrial scale.
This expansion represents an unprecedented milestone in the quest for sustainable and renewable energy sources, aligning with global goals to reduce carbon emissions.
Plant Uses Sugarcane Bagasse as Input for Ethanol Production
One of Raízen’s distinguishing characteristics is its proprietary technology that uses sugarcane bagasse as input for second-generation ethanol production. This biomass is obtained from processing sugarcane and the production of first-generation ethanol and sugar. This production method is crucial not only for the efficiency of ethanol production but also for environmental sustainability, as it reduces waste and makes the most of natural resources.
2G ethanol, also known as E2G, is considered an advanced biofuel with the potential to increase Raízen’s ethanol production capacity by about 50% without needing to add more land to the production. This means increasingly efficient production, generating more liters of ethanol per ton of cane.
Unprecedented Expansion of 2G Ethanol Production Capacity
Besides being a clean energy source for mobility, Raízen sees 2G ethanol as a key product for other applications beyond the automotive sector. There are plans to explore its use in industry, as a raw material in the production of green plastics, as well as fuels for aviation and maritime vessels. This is a remarkable example of how technology and innovation can shape the future of the energy and sustainability sector.
As Raízen continues to expand its capacity to produce second-generation ethanol, the world witnesses a significant transformation in the biofuels sector. This initiative reinforces Brazil’s position as a global leader in sustainable ethanol production, contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions and advancing towards a cleaner and more sustainable future.
In this context, Raízen stands out as a company that not only embraces innovation but also takes on a leadership role in providing energy solutions that can positively shape our future. With the inauguration of the Bonfim Bioenergy Park and the planned expansion, Raízen is paving the way toward a more sustainable world, with 2G ethanol production that will resonate around the planet, creating a lasting impact on future generations.
