Santiago Bernabeu, Home of Our Well-Known Real Madrid, Underwent an Epic Transformation, and Now It’s More Modern and Multifunctional Than Ever. With a Renovation That Cost No Less Than US$ 1 Billion, the Stadium Has Become a World Reference in Engineering and Design of Sports Facilities.

Seriously, never in history have we seen such a grand stadium renovation, the Bernabeu, the Real Madrid stadium, which was already one of the most famous in Europe, now resurfaces as a state-of-the-art arena. And it’s not just the exterior that impresses. Inside, it’s full of new features, from jaw-dropping façades to a retractable roof and field.

The Renaissance of Santiago Bernabeu in Spain

Real Madrid does not mess around; they wanted the best stadium in the world and it seems they succeeded. After four years of construction, the result is astonishing. The Bernabeu is now a tourist attraction in itself, drawing attention from around the world.

The most significant renovation in the history of the Bernabeu took place in 2011, when the club president, Florentino Perez, gave the green light for the stadium’s remodeling in Spain. The goal was to transform the stadium into something more than just a football field, creating a space capable of hosting a variety of events and generating new revenue streams.

The Architects L35, GMP, and Ribas Were the Brains Behind This Work

They proposed an enveloping steel façade where images can be projected, as well as a completely enclosed fixed roof. The project also includes new shops, entertainment and leisure facilities, green areas, and an underground parking lot.

The construction of the new retractable roof was quite a challenge, requiring the use of 800-ton cranes. And believe it or not, the field is also retractable! This allows the space to be used for other purposes without damaging the grass.

Changing the Stadium’s Location Was Never an Option

So, the architecture and engineering teams had to make it work in a limited space. And even with the pandemic and the ‘crisis’ in Ukraine, which caused delays and increased costs, the work is nearly finished.

With this renovation, Real Madrid not only modernized its stadium but also created a space for the entire city of Madrid to enjoy. Now, the Santiago Bernabeu is more than just a venue for football games; it’s a meeting point for the local community and visitors from around the world.
