Global Project Led by Westinghouse Marks Historical Advance Toward Clean and Sustainable Energy

One of the largest scientific projects today, the nuclear fusion reactor under construction in southern France entered a decisive assembly phase in June 2025, according to data from the ITER Organization and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The endeavor seeks to replicate on Earth the energy that powers the Sun, promising a source of clean, safe, and virtually inexhaustible energy. Furthermore, it represents one of the most ambitious milestones in modern engineering, combining science, technology, and international cooperation on an unprecedented scale.

Westinghouse Leads Critical Assembly of Reactor Core

The Westinghouse Electric Company, an American giant in the nuclear sector, has taken on the coordination of the assembly and welding of the nine steel sectors that make up the vacuum vessel, the heart of the reactor.

This structure has been designed to contain the superheated plasma, which can reach 150 million degrees Celsius, ten times hotter than the solar core. Therefore, the process requires millimeter precision and absolute rigor at every stage of the assembly.

According to technical reports published in June 2025, the operation is supported by Ansaldo Nucleare and Walter Tosto, partner companies of Westinghouse in the AMW consortium.

According to the former project director, Bernard Bigot, the assembly is comparable to a “three-dimensional industrial-scale puzzle.” This advance marks a historical turning point for nuclear engineering, bringing humanity closer to one of the greatest scientific dreams of the modern era.

International Cooperation Drives Scientific Advancement

The reactor is the result of unprecedented international scientific cooperation, involving 35 countries and the world’s leading technological powers. Among them are the European Union, United States, Russia, China, India, and Japan.

Each participant contributes with strategic systems, structures, and components, ranging from superconducting magnets to diagnostic and control equipment.

The United States is responsible for the central solenoid, while Russia provides high-tech precision instruments. Meanwhile, China, Japan, and India manufacture metal structures and auxiliary systems that support the assembly.

This collaboration reinforces the role of science as a global link, showing that the union between nations can accelerate the energy transition and the fight against climate change.

Technical Challenges and Goals of the Fusion Reactor

The central objective of the project is to demonstrate that nuclear fusion energy can be viable on a commercial scale. The reactor is expected to generate 500 megawatts of power from just 50 megawatts of input, achieving an energy gain ten times greater.

However, the challenge is immense. The team faces engineering complexities, schedule adjustments, and multinational coordination. Additionally, the system needs to withstand extreme conditions of heat, pressure, and magnetic field.

Tests with deuterium-tritium, crucial for validating the reactor’s performance, are scheduled for 2035, according to information from the ITER Organization. Despite this, each completed stage symbolizes a leap toward energy independence and a sustainable future.

Pathway Opened for the New Era of Fusion Energy

Though still experimental, the reactor represents the first step toward an energy revolution. The results obtained will serve as a foundation for the DEMO reactors, planned to generate commercial electricity by 2050, according to estimates from the IAEA.

Nuclear fusion stands out for not emitting greenhouse gases, not generating long-lived radioactive waste, and utilizing abundant hydrogen isotopes. Therefore, experts assert that the success of this technology could gradually replace fossil fuels and transform the global economy.

For physicist Bernard Bigot, “fusion is the Holy Grail of modern energy, as it combines sustainability, safety, and abundance in a single process.”

Thus, the reactor could become a turning point in human history, leading the planet into an era where the energy of the stars will become reality on Earth.
