Starting April 28, the Brazilian Driver’s License in Italy Will Officially Be Valid. The Measure Benefits Over 159 Thousand Resident Brazilians. Agreement Waives Tests and Applies to Categories A and B.
If you are Brazilian, live in Italy, and want to drive without a headache, there is great news: the Brazilian Driver’s License in Italy will finally be officially recognized. This means that starting from April 28, 2025, it will be possible to convert your driver’s license without having to take a theoretical or practical test in the European country.
The new agreement, recently approved by the Brazilian Senate, brings a change that many have been waiting for years. Less bureaucracy, more mobility, and of course, more freedom for those living abroad but still carrying a piece of Brazil in their license.
How Will It Work in Practice?
The conversion of the Brazilian Driver’s License in Italy will follow some simple but important rules:
-
BRICS is building its own payment system that could be operational by 2030, and experts say it could increase trade between the countries by up to 10% per year and add 3% to the GDP of each member of the bloc.
-
Government suspends over 3 million traffic fines in Brazil and drivers breathe a sigh of relief.
-
Iran has just approved toll charges for ships in the Strait of Hormuz and has completely prohibited the passage of vessels from the United States and Israel in the world’s most important maritime route for the global energy market.
-
Government cancels R$ 25 million “celebration” for Brasília’s anniversary and allocates funds to health.
- Only applies to definitive Driver’s Licenses, with valid expiration; provisional ones do not count.
- The driver must have been legally residing in Italy for less than 6 years.
- Only categories A (motorcycle) and B (car) are covered.
- The Driver’s License must have been issued before the driver became a resident in Italy.
- A local medical examination may be required to ensure fitness to drive.
Where to Convert the Driver’s License?
Just go to the Motorizzazione Civile, the Italian Department of Motor Vehicles, with the correct documentation: your Driver’s License, proof of residence, and, if necessary, a medical certificate. No written or practical test — just submit the papers and wait for the issuance of the Italian license.
Why Is This Important?
Today, the Brazilian community in Italy already exceeds 159 thousand legal residents — and many face difficulties driving, even with years of experience in Brazil. Before the agreement, the only option was to start everything from scratch: attending driving school, taking tests, exams, all over again.
With the recognition of the Brazilian Driver’s License in Italy, this process becomes much faster, cheaper, and fairer. After all, those who already know how to drive and have a valid license don’t need to prove everything again, right?
What Is Excluded?
Importantly, this agreement does not apply to licenses of categories C, D, and E, which include trucks, buses, and trailers. Those wanting to work with this type of vehicle still need to go through the full procedures in Italy.
