The New Volkswagen Pickup, Temporarily Called Udara, Promises to Combine Robustness for Work and Style for Everyday Use, Bringing Hybrid Engine, T-Cross Base, Strada Suspension, and Size Similar to Montana.

Volkswagen is preparing for the Brazilian market a mid-size pickup with an internal project, known as Udara (code VW247), which should take on the role of the Saveiro while competing with Chevrolet Montana and Fiat Toro.

The model features a design inspired by the Tera, an MQB A0 architecture with a front end derived from the T-Cross, and a rear suspension with a rigid axle and semi-elliptical springs — a solution similar to the Fiat Strada — with a planned launch around mid-2026.

The strategy includes work versions and configurations with a lifestyle proposal, aimed at individual customers.

Mid-Size Pickup Targets Toro and Montana

After the Tera, the Udara is the brand’s next major local launch.

In an interview with Autoesporte, Volkswagen’s global CEO, Thomas Schäfer, defined the project’s positioning as focused on “lifestyle.”

According to him, the Brazilian pickup market has two axes: one professional, with high demand, and another with an appealing lifestyle, characteristic of the country.

The executive indicated that the new truck should cater to both profiles without losing practicality.

Still in the same conversation, Schäfer stated: “We have already announced an investment in Argentina [for the new generation of the Amarok] and there will be the implementation of another beautiful pickup in Brazil,” indicating that the manufacturer sees the segment as strategic.

When asked about the Saveiro, he summarized the challenge: “What is the future? We need to provide an answer to this question.”

T-Cross Base and Work Solutions

The project utilizes the MQB A0 platform, shared with Polo, Virtus, Nivus, T-Cross, and the Tera itself.

To cater to the audience that uses the vehicle as a tool, the basic versions will adopt a rigid axle with semi-elliptical springs in the rear axle, favoring robustness and load capacity.

The combination indicates that the Udara will fill the gap left by the Saveiro in professional applications while not giving up on more equipped configurations for everyday use.

Meanwhile, the front of the unibody will come from the T-Cross, including the floor, side rails, panels, and A and B pillars.

From the B pillar onward, the structure will be unique to accommodate the truck bed and the specific wheelbase.

Hood, fenders, and front doors will be exclusive to differentiate the product in visual and ergonomic terms.

Dimensions and Development Mule

The first prototypes are circulating with a Tiguan body as a test mule.

The SUV measures 4.70 m in length and 2.79 m in wheelbase, numbers close to the estimated for the pickup: about 4.75 m and 2.80 m, respectively.

The reading of proportions indicates narrower wheel tracks and width close to 1.76 m, consistent with using the front assembly of the T-Cross.

In practice, the dimensions are similar to those of the Chevrolet Montana, reinforcing the “medium-compact” vocation.

In terms of design, the Udara is expected to replicate the language of the Tera, but with its own identity.

More horizontal headlights, a wide grille, and generous air intakes are likely to compose a robust-looking package, suitable for mixed use in the city and on dirt roads.

1.5 TSI Mild-Hybrid Engine and Automatic Transmission

The national debut of the 1.5 TSI Evo2 flex is expected to be in the Udara, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The configuration may come with a 48V mild-hybrid system, which helps with starts, acceleration, and efficiency.

The expected numbers are 150 hp and 25.5 kgfm of torque, values aligned with the performance required by a mixed-use pickup.

Thus, the model is likely to be the first electrified vehicle produced by Volkswagen in Brazil in a mild-hybrid mode, while the second-generation T-Cross is expected to introduce the brand’s full hybrid in the country.

Besides efficiency, the set promises smooth driving in urban traffic and better torque utilization at low RPM, important for use with moderate loads or on steep sections.

Factory, Investment, and Timeline

Production is planned for São José dos Pinhais (PR), a complex that already manufactures the T-Cross and Virtus.

The Paraná site is part of a R$ 3 billion package aimed at local modernization, within a cycle of R$ 20 billion and 17 launches predicted by the brand for Brazil by 2028.

The company is working with mid-2026 as a launch window, a phase that should follow the timeline of the Tera.

In market positioning, projected prices range from R$ 120 thousand to R$ 180 thousand, varying according to engine, transmission, and content.

Thus, the Udara will cover everything from work versions to family-use configurations focused on connectivity and comfort.

Commercial Strategy and Space in the Portfolio

Volkswagen intends for the Udara to operate in two fronts. At the base, it will serve clients seeking robustness and operational cost.

In the higher tiers, it will face Toro and Montana with attractive finishing, equipment, and design.

The global command reading is clear: it is a majorly Brazilian niche, with sufficient relevance to justify a tailor-made development.

Even with this dual mission, the brand emphasizes the need for practicality and versatility.

The goal is to deliver a product capable of transporting light cargo during the week and, without complex adjustments, serving leisure routines on weekends.

Name, Registration, and Next Steps

The name Udara is provisional and serves to identify the ongoing project.

At the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI), Volkswagen registered six alternatives to name the model: Acron, Airon, Arena, Tagro, Tukan, and Udara.

The final decision will be made for the pre-launch phase when communication needs to align positioning, identity, and target audience.

With the arrival of the new pickup, the Saveiro is expected to be discontinued.

This move is consistent with the shift in focus from the entry segment to more versatile proposals, without abandoning the clientele that relies on the vehicle for work.

The brand has not disclosed details about the bed, load capacity, or approach and departure angles. These data should emerge closer to the formal presentation.

What to Expect From the Product Package

The combination of MQB A0 platform, robust rear suspension, 1.5 TSI Evo2 engine with 48V, eight-speed transmission, and size similar to Montana indicates a pickup designed to balance efficiency, drivability, and usability.

Inside, the trend is to share solutions from T-Cross and Tera, with modern multimedia center and driving assistance consistent with the segment’s positioning.

While the launch does not happen, Volkswagen reinforces that the product will have a striking design and focus on dual use — professional and everyday.

In light of the proposal and estimated timeline, the lingering question is: will the technical and positioning package be sufficient to win over those currently comparing Toro and Montana, as well as to inherit the loyalty of Saveiro users?

Na realidade é mais uma opção com pouca utilidade prática.
A menos que tenha opção da cabine simples ( para trabalho).
Tenho uma Saveiro cabine simples
Utilizo muito no sítio ( trabalho com estufa, Hortifruti).
