Gigantic Mineral Wealth! Brazil Is One of the Leaders in Mining Metals and Precious Stones in the World Like Lithium, Niobium, Iron Ore, and More

Brazil is internationally recognized for its vast mineral wealth, playing a strategic role in various sectors of the global economy. In addition to being the second largest producer of iron ore in the world, the country leads in niobium reserves, essential for the high technology and infrastructure industries. The information, released by the Brazilian Mining Institute (Ibram), based on the 2022 Bulletin of the Mineral Sector of the Ministry of Mines and Energy, shows the relevance of Brazilian mineral reserves on the global stage, according to the site O Tempo.

Iron Ore: A Global Power

Brazil holds 18.9% of global iron ore reserves, being the second largest producer in the world, behind only Australia. Brazilian iron reserves are estimated at 34 billion tons, a figure that consolidates the country as one of the main suppliers of this essential raw material for steel production. The vast quantity of iron also places Brazil in a privileged position in international trade, contributing to its trade balance and economy.

Niobium: World Leadership

When it comes to niobium, Brazil dominates the global market with an impressive 94.1% of the world’s reserves. Niobium is a mineral of extreme importance for the manufacture of metal alloys used in cutting-edge industries, such as aerospace, automotive, and energy. Brazil’s exclusivity in this sector offers the country a unique competitive advantage, allowing it to act as a crucial supplier of this essential resource for advanced technologies.

Lithium: Potential for Energy Transition

Lithium, essential for the production of batteries for electric vehicles and electronic devices, places Brazil in a prominent position in the context of the global energy transition. With estimated reserves of 95 thousand tons and ranking sixth in the world among producers, Brazil has the potential to expand its participation in this market, leveraging the growth in demand for clean and renewable energy sources.

Diversity of Strategic Minerals

In addition to iron and niobium, Brazil also has significant reserves of other important minerals. In the case of manganese, for example, the country holds 20.8% of global reserves, while its share in natural graphite is 21.9%. Tantalum, used in the manufacture of electronic components, also highlights Brazil with 28.6% of global reserves. These numbers demonstrate that Brazilian mineral diversity goes far beyond the better-known minerals, also encompassing critical elements for the technology industry and renewable energy production.

The Importance of Mineral Reserves for Brazil and the World

With significant reserves of minerals essential for the development of advanced technologies and for the energy transition, Brazil positions itself as a key player in supplying strategic resources to the world. Furthermore, the capacity to exploit these riches offers the country substantial economic growth potential, especially in sectors such as technology, renewable energy, and infrastructure.

At a time when the demand for minerals used in new technologies and clean energy is on the rise, Brazil has the opportunity to establish itself as one of the leading global players, leveraging its vast reserves and leadership in niobium and iron. At the same time, the pursuit of sustainability in mineral exploration will be essential to ensure that this development occurs responsibly and brings long-term benefits to society and the environment.
