A Mega Project Is About to Transform BR-277! The Tripling of the Highway Between Curitiba and Paranaguá Promises to Reduce Travel Time by 20% and Increase Freight Transport Capacity by 66%. With R$ 6.4 billion Invested, the Highway Will Have New Lanes, Viaducts, and Lighting in the Serra do Mar!

The long-awaited tripling of BR-277, between Curitiba and Paranaguá, promises to transform the routine of drivers and bring huge benefits for freight transport.

With construction expected to begin in the second half of 2025, the completion of the project is scheduled for 2031.

The project, which already has R$ 6.4 billion in funding guaranteed by the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES), aims to significantly improve the highway’s infrastructure, providing a reduction of up to 20% in travel time and a 66% increase in freight transport capacity.

BR-277, which connects Curitiba to Paranaguá and crosses one of the most challenging sections, the Serra do Mar, will undergo a series of modifications that will benefit drivers and companies that depend on road transport.

The tripling of the lane in several sections of the mountain will be one of the main hallmarks of this project, which promises to reduce congestion and improve safety in the region.

Investments Focused on Additional Lanes and Viaducts

In the first years of the concession contract, the largest volume of investments will be concentrated on the duplication works and the construction of additional lanes, especially in the Serra do Mar, a region recognized for its complexity and high accident rates.

The most impactful works will be precisely these modifications in the lanes, which will facilitate vehicle flow and make the route safer for drivers.

In addition to the tripling of the lane, the project includes the construction of seven new viaducts and the correction of two dangerous paths.

The installation of a new escape area at km 46, at a point with a tight curve and steep descent, will be a crucial measure to improve safety and reduce the risk of accidents.

The escape area has been designed to prevent vehicles losing control from being involved in more serious accidents, providing a safe exit at one of the most critical points of the highway.

Lighting and New Safety Systems in the Serra do Mar

Another highlight of the project is the implementation of a lighting system in a section of the mountain, from km 31.5 to km 46.5, totaling 15 km of new installations.

This section is known for its challenging conditions, with tight curves and limited visibility, especially at night.

The installation of lighting will be a significant advancement for road safety, allowing drivers to face the route with greater visibility and safety.

In addition, a monitoring system will be implemented to increase traffic control and detect any incidents more quickly.

The goal is to reduce response times in emergencies, making travel safer and more efficient for everyone.

Benefits for the Economy and Logistics

The impact of the BR-277 works will be felt on various fronts, mainly in the local economy and transport logistics.

With the improvement in traffic capacity and the reduction in travel time, companies that depend on the highway for goods transport will see significant gains in efficiency.

The increase in the highway’s freight capacity by 66% represents a boost for regional logistics, allowing more goods to be transported with greater agility and lower costs.

Moreover, the reduction in travel time provided by additional lanes and tripling will be fundamental to increasing the competitiveness of companies operating in the region.

Drivers will also feel the positive impact of the project, with a safer and faster route to traverse the mountain, one of the most complicated and dangerous areas of the highway.

Completion Date and Next Steps

EPR Litoral Pioneiro, the concessionaire responsible for the works, has assured that the execution schedule is being followed as planned.

The company is already preparing to start the initial phases in the second half of 2025.

Although the contract stipulates the total delivery of the project for 2031, the duplication works and additional lanes should be completed earlier, bringing progressive improvements to the highway over the next few years.

Shortly, the concessionaire will announce more details about the next phases of the works, including the schedule for starting and completing the different stages.

The expectation is that with the advances in the works, the positive impact will be felt even more quickly, providing a more modern, safe, and efficient highway.

Future Perspectives for Mobility and Safety

With the tripling of BR-277, the government and the concessionaire hope to provide an improvement not only in road transport, but also in the quality of life for local residents and workers.

The increase in safety, reduction in accidents, and increase in transport capacity are just some of the benefits that the project will bring to the local community and travelers who depend on the highway.

The heavy investment in the Serra do Mar section and the innovative safety measures make this project one of the most anticipated for the coming years.

With the completion of the works, BR-277 will be more efficient and safer, better meeting the growing demand for transport and travel, and promoting the economic development of the region.
