An underwater robot, known as ROV, equipment that is operated remotely, was dragged by the force of the undertow to Praia de Barra Nova, in Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro.

The ROV appeared at the site on Thursday, July 18th and caught the attention of passers-by. The area had to be isolated to ensure the safety of residents and bathers, who were taking risks on the beach to get close to the machine. According to the City Hall of Saquarema, Petrobras was informed about the case and contacted the company responsible for the equipment.

Vehicles like this are used at great depths and have the function of supervising and assembling exploration and production equipment at great depths.

In a note, Petrobras said that the equipment belongs to the company DOF Subsea Brasil, which was not carrying out operations for Petrobras at the time of the incident.

According to information, the ROV may belong to the ship “Skandi Commander”, and was carrying out acceptance tests. The company recently signed a three-year project with Petrobras, and this vessel would be included in the project.

In a note, DOF Brasil reported that the equipment is installed on board one of the company's maritime support vessels and was detached early this Tuesday, July 16, due to sea conditions in recent days.

“Even with the unfavorable weather conditions, we started searching for the ROV immediately after the incident. Today (18/07), during operations, the ROV was found on the beach of Saquarema, RJ. The company has already mobilized resources and is removing the ROV from the beach,” the statement concluded.

Early Thursday night, City Hall reported that the area was closed for the removal of equipment from the site.
