The Largest Rainforest In The World Positions Itself As Fertile Ground For Ecological Innovations In The Electric Vehicle Industry.
The Amazon, besides being a symbol of the planet’s rich biodiversity, is establishing itself as a promising hub for electric mobility. This vast green region, filled with natural wealth, offers a universe of possibilities for the electric vehicle industry, especially at a time when fossil fuel prices are high and sustainability is increasingly valued.
Rise and Growth of Electric Mobility
The year 2022 marked a turning point in the electric mobility industry in Brazil. During this period, 49,245 electric vehicles, including hybrid and plug-in hybrid models, were registered. These vehicles achieved a market share of 2.5% relative to the total number of vehicles registered in the country during the same period. This raised the total electrified fleet in the country to 126,504 vehicles, an impressive growth of 41% compared to the previous year.
The growth trend in electric mobility was not limited to cars. Sales of electric motorcycles and scooters also experienced a significant increase of 346% in the last year. Between January and May 2022, more than 3,000 electric motorcycles were registered in Brazil, a staggering growth of 878% compared to the same period in 2021.

“Clean Energy Fuels Motorcycle Production In The Amazon”
According to Abraciclo, factories located in the Manaus Industrial Hub produced 1,413,222 motorcycles in 2022. This represents an increase of 18.2% compared to 2021 and is the best performance for the sector since 2014. The ten largest motorcycle manufacturers in the country are located in the Amazonian capital and account for over 98% of the motorcycles sold in Brazil.
Although it may seem strange to have an industrial boom in the midst of the Amazon Rainforest, the story begins more than 50 years ago with the Free Trade Zone of Manaus (ZFM). Created in 1957 during the administration of Juscelino Kubitschek, the ZFM aims to attract factories to a sparsely populated region of the country, promoting greater territorial integration.
The ZFM offers attractive tax incentives, such as tax reductions or exemptions and simplification of bureaucratic processes, making it an important job creator in the region.
The increase in electric vehicles in the area is a natural reflection of what the Amazon represents. This sector embodies a combination of innovation, sustainability, autonomy, and urban mobility, all concentrated in the heart of Brazil.
As we move towards a more sustainable future, it is imperative that national policies become more proactive in the clean energy sector. Electric mobility is the future of the sustainable automotive market, and the potential is undeniable. It is a movement that no one would want to miss out on.
