New Maritime Terminal for Natural Gas in Santa Catarina Will Generate Jobs and Enable the Development of Natural Gas Power Plant Projects

Finally, after three years, the Environmental Installation License for the South Gas Terminal (TGS) for liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification was issued in Babitonga Bay, in São Francisco do Sul, SC, along with the Environment Institute (IMA), linked to the State Secretariat for Sustainable Economic Development (SDE).

The announcement was made last Friday, May 28, by Governor Carlos Moisés. This stage enables New Fortress Energy (NFE) for the public call. The project will involve an investment of around US$77 million and create more than 600 jobs during its implementation.

“Our goal is to provide development conditions and attract investments to Santa Catarina. Today we took another step in that direction.

According to the governor, the Terminal is highly anticipated and will generate not only more jobs and income for residents but also competitiveness for our state.”

The terminal, a ship that will be docked 300 meters from the coast, will have a capacity of 15 million m³/day. The connection to land will be made by a submarine gas pipeline.

New Terminal Will Enable the Development of Natural Gas Power Plant Projects

Another important news is that the availability will enable the development of natural gas power plant projects. “With the terminal, Santa Catarina will take a significant leap in competitiveness with greater competition, increased supply of the input, and more attractive prices.

The new terminal also brings broad accessibility to energy supply, reaching areas farther from the gas access networks, such as the West.

The Secretary of Sustainable Economic Development (SDE), Luciano Buligon, claims that the new maritime terminal for gas in SC will resolve the energy bottleneck, allowing the state to continue growing.

The president of IMA, Daniel Vinicius Netto, highlighted the importance of the project for Santa Catarina and also for Brazil.

“The submerged gas pipeline doesn’t have significant environmental impact during the operation. Nonetheless, IMA has taken all precautions, establishing different conditions to ensure environmental preservation.

LNG Maritime Terminal in SC Will Represent the Increment of a New Gas Modal in Brazil

This project will represent the increment of a new gas modal (LNG) not only for our state but for Brazil and even for other countries.”

Santa Catarina, Paraná, and Rio Grande do Sul consume about five million cubic meters of gas per day, intended for the industrial and automotive markets.

The only supply source for the state is concentrated in the Bolivia-Brazil gas pipeline, which has also reached its capacity limit. With this new terminal, there will be an increase in the supply of natural gas for the southern region of Brazil.

The industry is the largest consumer of gas in Santa Catarina. And during the pandemic, this sector saw a 27% increase in consumption in the state compared to the previous period.

In addition to generating income, boosting industrial, commercial, and service activities, increasing tax revenue, and strengthening the local, state, and national economy, the terminal will bring other benefits, such as connecting the Brazilian gas market to the global market.

Santa Catarina Leaves Behind Being a Consumer of Gas to Become a Supplier

According to the Executive Secretary for International Affairs (SAI), Daniella Abreu, this is a very important international investment for the state and a structuring project for the development of Santa Catarina, which leaves behind being a consumer of gas to become a supplier, strengthening its energy matrix.

When operational, the terminal’s supply will be done by LNG tankers, which will come from the United States, the West Coast of Africa, or the Middle East.

“Our forecast is to make a total investment of US$77 million by the end of the year, which will change the configuration of the state and bring many industries.

We are committed to Santa Catarina and to the agility of this project’s development,” emphasizes the company’s director, Edson Real.
