New marine gas terminal in Santa Catarina will generate jobs and enable the development of natural gas thermoelectric power plant projects

Finally, after three years, the Environmental License for the installation of the Gas Sul Terminal (TGS) for the regasification of liquefied natural gas (LNG) was issued in Baía da Babitonga, in São Francisco do Sul, SC, with the Institute of the Environment ( IMA), linked to the State Secretariat for Sustainable Economic Development (SDE).

The announcement was made last Friday, May 28, by Governor Carlos Moisés. The step enables New Fortress Energy (NFE) for the public call. Approximately US$77 million will be invested in the venture and more than 600 jobs will be generated during its implementation.

“Our objective is to offer development conditions and attract investments to Santa Catarina. Today we took another step in that direction.

According to the governor, the Terminal is highly anticipated and will generate not only more jobs and income for Santa Catarina residents, but also competitiveness for our state”.

The terminal, a ship that will be moored 300 meters from the coast, will have a capacity of 15 million m³/day. The connection to land will be made by an underwater gas pipeline.

New terminal will enable the development of natural gas thermoelectric power plant projects

Another important novelty is that availability could make the development of natural gas thermoelectric power plant projects viable. “With the terminal, Santa Catarina will make a great leap in competitiveness with greater competition, expansion of the supply of the input and more attractive prices.

The new terminal also offers wide accessibility to the energy supply, reaching farther locations from the gas access networks, as is the case in the West.

The Secretary for Sustainable Economic Development (SDE), Luciano Buligon, says that the new maritime gas terminal in SC will resolve the energy bottleneck, so that the State continues to grow.

The president of the IMA, Daniel Vinicius Netto, highlighted the importance of the work for Santa Catarina and also for Brazil.

“The submerged gas pipeline does not have a significant environmental impact during full operation. In any case, the IMA took every precaution, establishing different conditions to guarantee environmental preservation.

SC LNG maritime terminal will represent the increment of a new gas modal in Brazil

This venture will represent the increment of a new gas modal (LNG) not only for our state, but for Brazil and even for other countries.”

Santa Catarina, Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul consume about five million cubic meters of gas per day, destined for the industrial and automotive market.

The only source of supply for the State is concentrated in the Bolivia-Brazil gas pipeline, which has already reached the limit of its capacity. With this new terminal, there will be an increase in the supply of natural gas to the southern region of Brazil.

Industry is the largest consumer of gas in Santa Catarina. And, during the pandemic, in this sector, there was a 27% increase in consumption in the State, compared to the previous period.

In addition to generating income, increasing industry, commerce and service activities, increasing tax revenue and strengthening the local, state and national economy, the terminal will bring other benefits, such as connecting the Brazilian gas market to the global.

Santa Catarina ceases to be a gas consumer and becomes a supplier

According to the Executive Secretary for International Affairs (SAI), Daniella Abreu, this is a very important international investment for the State and a structuring project for the development of Santa Catarina, which ceases to be a gas consumer and becomes a supplier, strengthening its energy matrix.

When it starts operating, the terminal will be supplied by LNG tankers, which will come from the United States, the West Coast of Africa or the Middle East.

“Our forecast is to make a total investment of US$77 million by the end of the year, which will change the configuration of the State and bring in many industries.

We are committed to Santa Catarina and to the speed of development of this project”, strengthens the company's director, Edson Real.
