Criciúma and Tubarão Will Receive New Natural Gas Networks, with SCGÁS Works Planned for 2025 and 2026, Aimed at Expanding Access to Safe and Efficient Energy.

SCGÁS plans to install 29 kilometers of new distribution networks for natural gas in the municipalities of Criciúma and Tubarão, in southern Santa Catarina, by the year 2026. It is expected that 13 km will be completed in 2025 and another 16 km in the following year, as part of the Company’s Multi-Year Business Plan.

The focus of the expansion is to primarily serve the residential and commercial sectors, keeping up with the growing demand for safer, more practical, and efficient energy.

Natural Gas Gains Ground as a Safe and Economical Alternative

SCGÁS’s initiative aims to strengthen the supply of piped natural gas, which offers significant advantages compared to traditional methods, such as the use of gas cylinders.

With the expanded network, consumers will have access to energy that burns cleaner, eliminating the need for storage and reducing the risks associated with handling cylinders.

Another benefit is the pricing model, which is regulated by ARESC (Agency for Regulation of Public Services of SC) and based on the customer’s actual consumption. This generates greater transparency and savings, since there are no product losses.

“The use of natural gas eliminates product losses and promotes greater consumption efficiency, which represents a direct gain for residential consumers and commercial establishments, who are always looking to reduce monthly expenses. The investment in network infrastructure throughout the streets of the cities is a strategic step to foster the economic and social growth of the municipalities,” explains Marcos Petri, coordinator of Works and Supervision at SCGÁS.

Expansion of the Natural Gas Network Will Bring Environmental Benefits

In addition to providing more energy efficiency, the expansion of the natural gas network has positive environmental impacts.

The replacement of more polluting sources helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to a cleaner urban environment.

The reduction in the traffic of supply vehicles also contributes to improved urban mobility, with less circulation of trucks and lower carbon dioxide (CO₂) emission rates.

This SCGÁS strategy is aligned with the goals of the National Energy Plan 2050, which considers natural gas a key player in Brazil’s energy transition.

Planning and Partnership with Municipalities to Minimize Impacts

SCGÁS is organizing the execution of the works in partnership with the municipal administrations of Criciúma and Tubarão.

The objective is to ensure that the implementation of the new natural gas infrastructure occurs in a coordinated manner, reducing disruptions to the daily lives of the population.

The expansion of the network represents an important advance not only in the quality of energy services but also in promoting the economic, social, and environmental development of the cities.

The expectation is that the natural gas distribution sector will register an average growth of 4.1% per year until 2030, especially in serving urban and industrial areas, according to projections from the Ministry of Mines and Energy.
