With Mineral Production Expanding, But With a Shortage of Skilled Labor, SENAI Is Offering Courses for the Training of Mining Workers in Minas Gerais
Aiming at the high demand from the mining sector, SENAI (National Service for Industrial Learning), through its units spread across Minas Gerais, is promoting the professional qualification of workers from mining companies by offering basic and professional development training courses.
With this course offering, many people seek SENAI to specialize and find a job in their field of education, just like Kenia Mara de Oliveira did between 2019 and 2021, completing a technical course in mining at the SENAI unit in Nova Lima, Minas Gerais.
Currently, she works in drilling and rock blasting at the mining company Vale. “SENAI is a very committed institution to the market, offering courses to assist professionals in various fields. With my training as a mining technician, opportunities opened up for me to lead a team and be better rewarded in my work,” says Kenia.

SENAI Course Offering Resulted from the High Demand for Skilled Labor
The offering of SENAI courses takes into account the high regional demand raised from the companies in the system, that is, the companies in the mining sector, ensuring that professional training aligns with market requirements. “SENAI helps us a lot, as we have a full practical understanding of the mining process,” says Kenia.
The Mining Sector in Minas Gerais and Brazil
The national mining sector, strong since the colonial period, generated approximately R$ 339 billion in 2021, an increase of 62% compared to R$ 209 billion reported in 2020, according to data from the Brazilian Mining Institute (Ibram).
About 1.150 billion tons of minerals were produced in Brazil during 2021, which is 7% higher compared to 2020, when 1.073 billion tons were mined.
This increase in mineral production is related to the state that bears the importance of mining in its name: Minas Gerais, one of the largest mineral producing states in Brazil, tied only with Pará.
According to Ibram data, Minas Gerais accounted for 42% of the total revenue of the Brazilian mining industry in 2021, reaching R$ 143 billion.
Even with High Production and Revenue in the Mining Sector, Minas Gerais Needs Skilled Labor to Work in the Market
Even with high production and revenue in the mining sector, the available qualified workforce in the state is not sufficient to meet current market demand. This is reported by the Mining Industry Union of Minas Gerais (Sindiextra).
“The sector has faced difficulties in hiring qualified labor, especially at the technical level. Since the beginning of the pandemic, there has been a rise in the commodity market, which has benefited the Brazilian mineral sector. This demand has translated into a labor shortage,” says Sindiextra.
The Ministry of Labor and Employment (MTE) conducted a survey in 2020 regarding the profile of workers in the mineral sector of Minas Gerais and the job market outlook for these professionals.
According to this survey, about 1,612 companies linked to the mineral extraction sector employed 64,898 workers that year.
The three sectors that had the most job positions filled were:
• Iron Ore Extraction
• Extraction of Stone, Sand, and Clay
• Extraction of Non-Ferrous Metallic Minerals
According to the MTE study, within the total of employees linked to the mining sector, the majority (38%) were professionals aged between 30 and 39 years, and only 59.7% of them had completed high school.
It is due to this high demand for professionals in the mining area that SENAI is offering courses for the professional qualification of the mineral market in Minas Gerais, aiming to train skilled workers to operate in any areas required by the job market.
