New Sugarcane Crop in Pernambuco May Be the Best in Four Years, Reaching Almost 13 Million Tons and Generating Seventy Thousand Jobs in the State

Historically, the cultivation of sugarcane has been a major ally in the Pernambuco economy. With the resumption of financial activities, Sindaçúcar Pernambuco estimates that 12.8 million tons of sugarcane will be harvested in the current crop, generating 70 thousand jobs in the State. The good news is due to the off-season marked by climatic stability, which positively influenced the new harvest period – which began in September and is expected to continue until March.

Renato Cunha, president of Sindaçúcar Pernambuco, hopes that this harvest will be the largest in four years. “The off-season climate was positive, leading to growth projections for the current harvest. However, projections may be reduced due to a stronger summer,” he explained.

Although the sector is not in its best moment, the expectation is to harvest around 13 million tons of sugarcane. “The sector is still not in its best moments, but it is trying to consolidate a recovery, seeking mechanisms for internal market and export,” Renato Cunha analyzed.

Brazil may benefit and make exports even more attractive as sugar-exporting countries like India and Thailand face challenges in exporting the product due to the rise in the dollar and the current stockpiling by Asian countries.

Sugarcane and the Brazilian Sugar-Ethanol Market

The president of Sindaçúcar dismisses the possibility of shortages and subsequent increases in sugar prices in the country, stating that Brazil produces around 42 million tons and only consumes 10 million.

The sugar industry was also affected by the crisis caused by the coronavirus. One of the main reasons was the sharp decrease in ethanol consumption and market disputes for oil.

Sugar and ethanol mills have been recovering rapidly. From January to September 2020, the sector generated 21,801 new jobs in Pernambuco, making it the largest employer among national mills.

The sugar-ethanol industry generated over 10 thousand jobs in September of this year, representing 47% of the total jobs created throughout the State of Pernambuco.

“Cane assets generate value in commodity goods, but beyond that, they create thousands of jobs across the industry, logistics, and other sectors,” Renato Cunha highlighted.
