The Mall Of America Is One Of The Largest Shopping And Entertainment Complexes In The United States. Opened In 1992 In Bloomington, Minnesota, The Mall Of America Brings Together Hundreds Of Stores, Attractions, And Millions Of Visitors In A Gigantic Space.

Origin Of The Mall Of America

The Mall Of America Was Built In Bloomington, Minnesota, On The Site Of The Former Metropolitan Stadium. The Stadium Had Been Home To The Minnesota Twins, A Major League Baseball Team, Until 1982.

After The Structure Was Demolished In 1985, The Canadian Group Triple Five Obtained The Rights To Develop A Large Project On The Site.

The Proposal Called For A Huge Shopping Center, Amusement Park, Convention Center, And Hotel Complex.

The Groundbreaking Ceremony Took Place On June 14, 1989. Three Years Later, On August 11, 1992, The Mall Was Officially Opened To The Public.

Giant Structure Of The Mall Of America

When It Opened Its Doors, The Mall Of America Occupied 31.6 Hectares, Equivalent To 78 Acres. The Total Built Area Reached 390,000 Square Meters, Or 4.2 Million Square Feet, Spread Over Four Floors.

The Mall Initially Featured 330 Stores. Among The Main Anchors Were Nordstrom, Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, And Sears.

In Addition To The Stores, The Complex Included Restaurants, Nightclubs, And A Movie Theater With 14 Screens. An Indoor Theme Park Called Camp Snoopy, Inspired By Charles Schulz’s Peanuts Comic Strip, Was Also Part Of The Structure.

Another Highlight Was The Parking Lot With 13,000 Spaces, Considered The Largest In The World At The Time Of Opening.

Changes And Expansions Over The Years

In The Following Decades, The Mall Of America Continued To Operate Even With The Expansion Of Online Retail.

During This Period, Some Anchor Stores Closed Their Doors. Bloomingdale’s Closed In 2012, While Sears Ceased Operations In 2019.

In 2020, The COVID-19 Pandemic Led To The Temporary Closure Of The Mall For Three Months.

The Location Also Recorded Two Shootings In 2021 And 2022. In The First Case, Two People Sustained Minor Injuries. In The Second, There Were No Fatalities. The Suspects Were Arrested Weeks Later.

New Attractions And Integrated Transportation

Over Time, New Attractions Were Added To The Mall Of America. In 1996, An Aquarium Was Installed In The Complex.

In 2008, The Theme Park Changed Its Name To Nickelodeon Universe. The Mall Also Gained Light Rail Connections To Minneapolis, St. Paul, And Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport.

Additionally, The Location Received Bus Service And Underwent A Major Expansion And Renovation Completed In 2015.

What Exists Inside The Complex Today

In 2022, When It Celebrated 30 Years, It Was Estimated That 1.2 Billion People Had Already Visited The Mall Of America.

The Complex Now Occupies About 520,000 Square Meters, Equivalent To 5.6 Million Square Feet, With More Than 520 Stores.

The Mall Is Large Enough To Have Its Own ZIP Code. Inside, There Are Also Thousands Of Live Plants And 300 Trees Planted.

The Indoor Theme Park Covers 2.8 Hectares And Includes Five Roller Coasters, A Ferris Wheel, A Free Fall Tower, A Water Ride, And A Carousel.

Other Attractions Include An Escape Room, Flight Simulator, Go-Karting, Laser Tag, Mini Golf, Virtual Reality, Axe Throwing, And Three Arcades.

The Complex Also Features About 50 Restaurants And A Comedy Club Located On The Fourth Floor.
