With Investments of Over R$ 6 Billion, the Porto do Açu Plants Will Be the Most Efficient Power Plants in Latin America, Capable of Supplying Energy for 14 Million Households
Siemens Energy has just secured a contract for the construction of the GNA II Thermoelectric Plant, located in Porto do Açu, in the state of Rio de Janeiro – the largest LNG complex in Latin America. UTE GNA II will be the second combined cycle plant that Siemens Energy will build on a turnkey basis at the thermoelectric hub and will have an installed capacity of 1.7 gigawatts (GW).

According to Siemens, the construction of the plant, which is already underway, follows the successful commissioning of GNA I in the second half of 2021.
The GNA I and GNA II Plants Will Be the Most Efficient Power Plants in Latin America
With a combined capacity of 3 GW, GNA I and GNA II will be able to supply electricity equivalent to the consumption of 14 million households. This second unit will feature the first application of HL class gas turbines in Brazil.

The combined cycle plants powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) will be the most efficient thermoelectric plants in Latin America. The total project value is approximately € 1 billion.
The scope of Siemens Energy includes delivering the entire power island, which consists of three high-efficiency HL class gas turbines, one steam turbine, four electrical generators, and three heat recovery steam generators (HRSG), as well as instrumentation and control systems.
Additionally, the services offered by Siemens Energy will also cover long-term operation and maintenance (O&M) of the plant, including advanced remote monitoring and diagnostics by the Remote Operations Center located in Jundiaí, São Paulo.
Siemens Partners with Andrade Gutierrez, Which Will Provide Civil Works, Infrastructure, and Assembly for the UTE GNA II
The plant is being constructed in conjunction with consortium partner Andrade Gutierrez, which will provide civil works, infrastructure, and assembly.
“Our participation in this exceptional project reinforces how our comprehensive LNG approach – for – Energy; adds value for our partners and also meets the need for affordable and reliable energy,” says Jochen Eickholt, a member of the Executive Board of Siemens Energy AG.
“This project is strategic, not only because of its size, but also due to its geographical location, close to Brazil’s two main gas pipeline systems, in the Northeast and Southeast regions of the country. It is important to highlight that our gas turbines for GNA II are ready to burn hydrogen in the future. This means our technology is prepared for the future of our clients,” Eickholt adds.
The Two Plants Will Supply Power to Regions Such as Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, and Rio de Janeiro
The Açu Natural Gas project includes the construction of two thermoelectric plants, an LNG regasification terminal, based on a FSRU (Floating Storage and Regasification Unit), in addition to substations and transmission lines to connect the plants to the National Interconnected System.
The thermoelectric complex is part of the Açu Gas Pole, a project under development at the Açu Port Complex that aims to provide a logistical solution for receiving, processing, converting to electrical energy, and transporting natural gas in the Campos and Santos basins, as well as for importing and storing LNG. A second phase will encompass additional thermal energy projects under the environmental license of 6.4 GW owned by GNA.
The construction of the GNA I plant began in January 2018 and became commercially operational in September 2021. The two plants will supply power to regions such as Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, and Rio de Janeiro within the National Interconnected System.
