The video shows the moment a sinkhole opens on the beachside of Praia Grande, causing a municipal guard to fall during heavy rain. The agent manages to exit the hole on his own while the area remains cordoned off, and the city attributes the incident to a water main break.

A sinkhole opened beneath the feet of a municipal guard on the beachside of Praia Grande, located on the coast of São Paulo, during the night of Monday, September 14, 2026. The agent was in the affected area during heavy rain when the ground suddenly gave way, making him disappear into the hole in front of the cameras.

According to a video posted by the g1 channel on YouTube on September 14, 2026, the footage captured the tense moments following the fall and showed the guard successfully leaving the opening on his own. The incident occurred following a period of heavy rainfall in the Baixada Santista, as the affected area was cordoned off, with the city citing a water main break as the cause of the issue.

The video sequence starts with the municipal guard next to the affected area in what seemed like a controlled situation. However, in a matter of seconds, the surface where he was standing completely gave way, and the agent fell into the sinkhole, momentarily disappearing from view and prompting an immediate reaction from those observing the incident.

The fall happened so quickly that there was virtually no time to react. Nearby individuals noticed the accident and alerted others that the guard had fallen into the hole. Shortly thereafter, the guard managed to escape the opening, turning what began as a concerning scene into a scare without any serious consequences for the agent.

Video Records the Exact Moment the Sinkhole Swallows the Agent

The impact of the recording lies in the abrupt change of the scene. The guard appears over the affected area and, seemingly without any evident warning that the ground would give way at that moment, is taken by surprise by the opening in the ground. In a matter of seconds, part of the surface disappears beneath his feet.

The footage highlights how underground damages can remain largely unseen until the support of the pavement is no longer able to bear the weight above it. In the case of Praia Grande, the sinkhole opened exactly where the guard stood, making it impossible to avoid the fall once the collapse process began.

Heavy Rain Impacted Praia Grande and Other Cities in the Region

The accident occurred during a period of meteorological instability in the Baixada Santista. Rainfall had affected several municipalities overnight and continued to be heavy in parts of the region the following morning, including Santos, as well as areas of the Ribeira Valley.

The sinkhole in Praia Grande opened precisely in this context of intense rain. Although the precipitation is part of the scenario in which the incident occurred, the cause indicated for the opening of the hole was a problem with the underground infrastructure, which led to the isolation of the affected area.

City Hall points to burst water main after opening of the hole

According to the information released about the occurrence, a burst water main was identified by City Hall as responsible for the opening of the sinkhole. Given the risk posed by the compromised terrain, the stretch of the beachfront was isolated to prevent pedestrian traffic in the affected area.

When an underground pipe leaks or bursts, the flow of water can displace some of the material supporting the pavement. This process can create voids beneath the surface and compromise its stability, causing the apparently intact pavement to collapse suddenly.

Guard escapes sinkhole unaided after tense seconds

Despite the unexpected fall, the footage shows the municipal guard managing to exit the hole without needing assistance from others. The guard returns to the surface on his own after moments of tension, while those nearby observe the situation.

The outcome prevented a visually impressive incident from turning into a more serious situation. Nevertheless, the episode highlighted the risks present in areas where the pavement has lost support and underscored the importance of keeping pedestrians away until a complete assessment of the site is conducted.

Area remains isolated after underground infrastructure problem

After the sinkhole opened, isolating the area became a necessary measure to prevent further collapses. Even when only a portion of the pavement shows visible rupture, the soil nearby may also be compromised, especially when there is water movement beneath the surface.

The indication of a water main rupture has drawn attention to the infrastructure located beneath the waterfront. With the area restricted, the responsible teams can assess the extent of the problem and the condition of the ground before the section is reopened for circulation.

Fall shows how risk can arise without warning

One of the most striking aspects of the footage is the lack of time for the guard to avoid the accident. He was on the spot when the surface simply lost its support, turning a routine patrol into seconds of tension in front of the cameras.

The incident in Praia Grande ended with the agent being able to escape unharmed, while the area remained cordoned off after the problem was identified. The scene, however, serves as a warning about the risks of being close to restricted areas after heavy rains or failures in underground networks.
