Stellantis Signed A New Agreement To Strengthen The Use Of ‘Clean Lithium’ For The Production Of Electric Car Batteries. The Expectation Is That The Company Will Have More Than 25 Thousand Metric Tons Of Lithium Annually.

Stellantis has reached an agreement to expand the acquisition of low-emission lithium from Controlled Thermal Resources (CTR). The material is quite common in the production of electric car batteries and will be present in more than 25 new launches from the automaker in the United States.

Stellantis Will Use ‘Clean Lithium’ To Support Its Electric Car Launches

The automaker will have more than 25 thousand metric tons of clean lithium per year for a decade for its electric cars. According to Stellantis itself, the CTR project aims to recover lithium from geothermal brines, through sustainable energy and steam for the generation of battery-grade lithium products in an integrated closed-loop process, which excludes the need for evaporation brine ponds, fossil fuels in processing, and open-pit mining. CTR’s production capacity is 300 thousand metric tons per year.

Clean lithium will support Stellantis’ new electric car launches in the United States and half of the planned battery-powered vehicle sales by the beginning of the next decade. The automaker has also invested to expand battery capacity from 140 GWh to approximately 400 GWh, technology developed in battery industries in North America and Europe, alongside partners.

According to Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares, in the fight against greenhouse gases, consolidating the battery electric vehicle supply chain to support ambitious electrification goals is critically important. The executive also states that ensuring Stellantis has a strong, low-carbon, and competitive lithium supply from multiple partners around the world enables the company to meet its aggressive electric car production plans responsibly.

Manufacturer Estimates Sale Of 5 Million Electric Cars Per Year

According to CTR CEO Rod Colwell, this definitive agreement with Stellantis develops a new benchmark for the automotive industry in the United States. Ensuring clean lithium generated from renewable energy contributes to decarbonizing the supply chain of batteries that provide electric cars, which are cleaner and have less environmental impact.

As part of the Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan, Stellantis announced its plans to sell 5 million electric cars globally per year by 2030, achieving 100% of the BEV passenger car sales mix in Europe and also 50% of BEV passenger and light commercial vehicles in North America.

According to the automaker’s executive, ensuring clean lithium generated with sustainable energy contributes to the decarbonization of the battery supply chain that, in turn, leads to more sustainable cars with less environmental impact.
