The HDMI Port On Your TV Is ‘Gold’: See How To Unlock Secret Functions That Improve Sound And Picture Like Magic.

Have you ever stopped to think that the HDMI port on your television can do much more than just display image and sound? Many people use this feature daily, whether to connect a video game console, plug in a laptop, or watch something on a smart TV, but few know that there are powerful functions hidden that can enhance your experience with the device. And the best part: activating these features is much simpler than it seems.

More Than Just A Simple Cable: What Does HDMI Really Do?

HDMI, which stands for High-Definition Multimedia Interface, has become a standard even in the most basic TVs. It allows for the transmission of high-definition audio and video through a single cable, which greatly simplifies the life of those who enjoy high-quality content.

But there’s more: depending on your TV’s version and the type of cable you use, you can unlock features that improve not only the image but also the sound — and even the way you interact with your devices.

One of the most interesting features is HDMI eARC, which is part of the HDMI 2.1 specification. This feature is mainly aimed at those who use soundbars, home theaters, or powerful sound systems.

The eARC can send audio from the TV to the external equipment without compression, maintaining the original sound quality. This means you can hear movies and games with the same level of clarity and depth that the studios intended — including formats like Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, Dolby Digital, and multichannel PCM.

According to the HDMI Forum, eARC offers up to 37 Mbps of bandwidth just for audio, while traditional ARC reaches a maximum of 1 Mbps — a difference that directly impacts sound quality.

How To Know If Your TV Has HDMI eARC?

Not every television with an HDMI port supports eARC. This feature is only present in newer models, generally from 2019 onwards, that support HDMI 2.1. You can check this in your TV’s manual or directly on the manufacturer’s website.

If your smart TV is compatible, follow these steps to activate HDMI eARC:

  1. Access the TV’s Settings menu;
  2. Go to the Sound tab;
  3. Click on Advanced Settings;
  4. Enable the HDMI eARC option.

This simple change can make a huge difference if you have a quality soundbar or a sound system that supports advanced formats.

Control Everything With One Remote: Discover HDMI-CEC

Another underutilized feature of the HDMI port is HDMI-CEC, also known as Anynet+ on Samsung TVs. With it, you can control multiple devices connected to the television using only one remote control.

Imagine turning on the smart TV and, automatically, the video game console, soundbox, and câble TV receiver also turn on together. Or switching HDMI inputs without having to manually change it on the remote. That’s exactly what HDMI-CEC allows.

In addition to turning everything on and off together, the system also enables you to adjust the volume of other devices directly from the TV remote. According to Sony Brazil, this feature makes using a home theater or soundbar much more integrated and easier to use daily.

To activate HDMI-CEC on your television, follow this path:

  1. Enter Settings;
  2. Go to the Connection tab;
  3. Look for External Device Manager;
  4. Enable the HDMI-CEC function or Anynet+, in the case of Samsung.

It’s worth remembering that all connected devices must also be compatible with the CEC function for the system to work correctly.

More Integration, More Convenience

Activating these two features — eARC and CEC — can completely transform how you use your television. Whether it’s gaming, watching series with cinema-like sound, or simply making daily use easier with fewer remotes and more speed, HDMI has much more to offer than most people realize.

In fact, if you use a soundbar, console, TV receiver, Blu-ray players, or any other device connected via HDMI, it’s definitely worth exploring these hidden features. The difference in usage is real and notable, especially with streaming content like Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime, which already offer audio in formats like Dolby Atmos for those with compatible equipment.

And of course: share this content with that friend or family member who always complains about the TV sound — the problem might be solved with just a few clicks.
