Sudene Released R$ 8.6 Million to Expand Wind Power in Bahia, Funding Four New Parks of the Assuruá 5 Complex. With Investments from FDNE, the State Strengthens Its Leadership in Wind Power Production, Boosting Sustainable Development and the Regional Economy.
The Superintendência do Desenvolvimento do Nordeste (Sudene) announced an investment of R$ 8.6 million from the Fundo de Desenvolvimento do Nordeste (FDNE) for the construction of four new wind farms in the state of Bahia, in the municipalities of Gentio do Ouro and Xique-Xique.
These investments are part of the Assuruá 5 Energia Complex, which has already received over R$ 556 million from the FDNE, totaling nearly R$ 1 billion in investments.
With this new funding release, Sudene reinforces its fundamental role in promoting wind energy, a strategic sector for sustainable development in Bahia and the entire Northeast region.

231 turbines of 260 meters at 160 km from the coast, monopiles weighing as much as nine blue whales embedded in the North Sea, and a crane ship taller than the Eiffel Tower: Hornsea 3 will be the largest offshore wind farm on the planet by 2027, and its first components have already arrived in England.
New Wind Farms Expand the Energy Capacity of Bahia
The funds will be applied to parks Assuruá 5 I, II, IV, and VI, which together have an installed capacity of 549.8 MW.
For parks I and II, the amount corresponds to the fifth installment of the financing, while for parks IV and VI, it is the fourth installment.
Currently, Bahia is one of the largest wind energy hubs in the country, with 48 installed parks, consolidating the importance of wind energy in the energy landscape of the Northeast.
According to the 2024 Annual Bulletin of the Brazilian Wind Energy and New Technologies Association (ABEEólica), the region already has 76 parks in operation.
Danilo Cabral, superintendent of Sudene, highlighted the importance of financing for the region’s growth: “With each new disbursement, like this one for the Assuruá 5 Energia Complex, we reinforce the transformative capacity of the FDNE. It is not just a financial instrument; it is our engine for growth, the lever that propels the Northeast toward a more prosperous and sustainable future. By investing in clean energy projects like this one, we are strengthening local productive chains.”
Expansion and Socio-Environmental Impacts of the Assuruá Complex
The Assuruá Complex is operated by the Omega Energia group and consists of 15 wind farms, currently totaling 353 MW, with plans to increase its capacity to 808.1 MW.
Omega Energia is also present in other Brazilian states, such as Piauí, Maranhão, Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso do Sul, Rio de Janeiro, and Rio Grande do Sul, as well as operating overseas in the United States.
According to Heitor Freire, Director of Fund Management and Tax Incentives at Sudene, the financing for Assuruá 5 was contracted in 2021, with Banco do Brasil acting as the operating agent.
Omega Energia also implements relevant socio-environmental countermeasures, including actions aimed at social communication, environmental education, health, leveraging local labor, recovery of degraded areas, deforestation control, and monitoring of wildlife.
Sudene Strengthens the Future of Renewable Energy in the Northeast
In addition to the four parks awarded the new funding, Sudene is also financing parks Assuruá 5 III and V, which together have the capacity to generate 288 MW and received R$ 257.6 million in credits from the FDNE.
These initiatives highlight Sudene’s role in supporting the advancement of wind energy in the Northeast, promoting diversification of the energy matrix and regional development with sustainability.
With these investments, Sudene directly contributes to solidifying Bahia as one of the largest wind energy hubs in Brazil, boosting the local economy and fostering a clean and renewable energy matrix for the future of the region.
