Ranking Reveals Which Profession is the Highest Paid in Brazil — And It’s Not Medicine or Jurisprudence. See Which Career Leads Salaries in the Country
A survey released this Friday (28) revealed the highest paying professions in Brazil. The ranking classified the average salaries of 428 positions and highlighted the extremes of remuneration in the country. The difference between the top and the bottom of the list is significant: while the highest paying profession offers an average salary of R$ 24,686.16, the lowest paid one earns R$ 404.9 per month.
The study was conducted by economist Bruno Imaizumi from the consultancy LCA 4intelligence and published by Folha de S. Paulo. The research uses microdata from the Pnad Contínua (Continuous National Household Sample Survey) from IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) for the fourth quarter of 2024.
Marine Engineers Lead the Ranking
The highest paying profession in Brazil is that of marine engineers, who have the highest average salary in Brazil: R$ 24,686.16 per month. These professionals are responsible for operating, maintaining, and repairing machines and equipment on board ships. They may also perform related functions on land.

The training for this profession is conducted at the School of Marine Officers Training (EFFOM). The course lasts three years in a school regime, plus one year of practical training on vessels and platforms. To enroll in EFFOM, it is necessary to take a public competition, have completed high school, and be under 24 years old.
There is also the option of the Adaptation Course for Second Marine Engineering Officer (ASOM). In this case, the selection process is open to Brazilians over 18 years old who have a higher education recognized by the Ministry of Education.
Other Professions with High Salaries
Just below marine engineers are general directors and general managers, with an average salary of R$ 20,677.70. Following them are specialist doctors, who earn an average of R$ 20,139.72 per month.
Mining exploitation managers are also among the highest paid, with R$ 19,417.09, followed by judges, with an average salary of R$ 19,029.25. Other positions with high remuneration include research and development managers (R$ 16,607.59), policy and planning managers (R$ 15,347.20), and direct service workers for passengers (R$ 15,144.71).
Also in the ranking are philosophers, historians, and political science specialists, earning R$ 15,000.00, general clerks (R$ 14,838.09), and tax administration agents (R$ 14,745.86).
Averages Are Also High for Doctors and Economists
In addition to specialist doctors, general doctors earn R$ 14,710.78 per month. Economists are in the range of R$ 14,487.35. Meanwhile, information technology and communications services managers have an average salary of R$ 14,178.88. Financial managers earn R$ 14,100.83.
Among engineers, the highest highlight is for chemical engineers, with an average salary of R$ 13,965.42. Administration policy specialists earn R$ 13,951.76.
The ranking also includes legal professionals not previously categorized (R$ 13,932.09) and directors of cinema, theater, and related fields (R$ 13,588.85). Closing the top twenty are branch managers of banks, financial services, and insurance, with R$ 13,344.47.
Professions with the Lowest Salaries
At the other end of the ranking are professionals with the lowest average salaries in the country. The category personal attendants and private servants has the lowest remuneration: R$ 404.9 per month.
Just above them are the water carriers and firewood collectors, with an average of R$ 579.21. Next are the elementary workers in hunting, fishing, and aquaculture, who earn R$ 832.36.
