An ethanol storage tank, with a capacity of 64 million liters, exploded on the morning of this Saturday, August 10, at the Ipê plant in Nova Independência, a municipality in the interior of São Paulo. No one was injured and activities at the facility were suspended.
The fire started around 9 AM in the reservoir. According to the Fire Department, the tank has a capacity to store 64 million liters of ethanol.

Initial reports indicate that the explosion occurred due to a failure in the tank’s lid.
There are a total of eight alcohol tanks and three more under construction. Firefighters from Andradina and the plant’s firefighting team worked to prevent further explosions.
In addition to the plant’s firefighting team, firefighters from Araçatuba (SP), Andradina (SP), and other cities in the region were summoned to contain the flames.
The 20th Fire Battalion of PMESP (Military Police of the State of São Paulo) released images and information about the case through their Twitter account.

“We are still attending to the fire incident in the alcohol storage tank. Several vehicles from the 20th Fire Battalion are on site. The 10th, 12th, and 13th Fire Battalions are supporting us with several vehicles, as well as plants, companies, and firefighters from the region,” informed the firefighters’ profile around 6:15 PM.
The company sent the following statement to the press: ” Pedra Agroindustrial S/A – Usina Ipê informs that this morning, a fire affected one of its ethanol storage tanks. All fire-fighting and recovery measures for the other tanks have been and are being taken by the company, with no victims of any kind. The causes – still unknown – will be investigated.”
