In three years, LOTS Group managed to reduce the number of distractions while driving by 50%
Before starting their work journey, drivers need to complete the vehicle checklist. The procedure is performed on a tablet via the Driver APP, a fleet management system developed by LOTS, a company of the SCANIA group, to optimize logistics flows through technology and innovation, which performs a customizable truck checklist and checks various points to certify that it is ready to start the shift, such as tires, general vehicle information, among other options. Only after this evaluation can the driver proceed with the trip.
In our operations, we use internally created digital systems and external tools integrated to assist with intelligence in our control towers. Within our system, we have a module dedicated to the handling of accidents, incidents, and deviations that occur during operations, where the driver can easily report any irregularities in the route or fleet,” explains Rafael Santos, Logistics Transport Manager of LOTS’ ABC Paulista Operation.

To monitor the fleet, prevent failures and reckless behavior, the company invests in various technologies aimed at the safety of operations and drivers, in addition to video monitoring and telemetry, the trucks also feature a dynamic georeferencing system, road monitoring, and tire management. All vehicles in the group are connected and have 24-hour monitoring for greater security and real-time decision-making.
The cameras installed inside the truck capture the driver’s movements and all actions inside the vehicle. They monitor whether the driver is distracted, taking their focus off the road, tired, sleepy, not having one hand on the wheel, or even using a mobile phone. Every movement is recorded. Through telemetry, it is even possible to detect if the driver has their eyes closed for more seconds than usual. In cases of distraction, a security alarm is triggered within the vehicle, and the control tower team contacts the driver.
Numbers
From 2021 to 2023, the company was able to reduce the number of distractions in the fleets by 50%, considering the use of cigarettes and mobile devices, the latter being the third leading cause of traffic deaths in Brazil.
Technology has also been essential in preventing speeding and avoiding accidents. In 2022, the company recorded 5,400 cases, while last year the number dropped to 3,732 and from January to April 2024, there were only 384 cases.
“In all our operations, safety is the number one priority. All the information we collect 24/7 helps us in the effort to maintain safer traffic and care for our drivers daily, facilitating the creation of continuous improvement programs, ensuring a more peaceful environment for everyone. We invest heavily in training and raising awareness among our team. We understand that conscious drivers with good risk perception adopt safe behaviors, not only contributing to their own safety but to better traffic for all,” explains Rafael.
