Eternit Launches Tile That Promises to Change the Solar Energy Sector. This is the New Solar Tile Capable of Being up to 15x More Powerful than Previous Versions, check it out!

Eternit, a civil construction company, recently received Inmetro registration to market the country’s first fiber-cement solar tile, named Eternit Solar. After some tests conducted at the Energy and Environment Institute of the University of São Paulo, the new model for the solar energy sector is now certified. It is worth mentioning that this Eternit solar tile represents a significant advancement over the first, delivering up to 15 times more power.

How Does the Eternit Solar Tile Work?

Solar tiles are an intelligent adaptation of photovoltaic technology, directly integrated into common building materials like concrete. This integration allows the tiles to capture solar energy and convert it into electricity, similar to conventional solar panels.

However, unlike panels, solar tiles maintain the aesthetic of the roof, offering a more integrated and less visually intrusive solution. Each Eternit solar tile features embedded photovoltaic cells that capture solar radiation. These cells are responsible for converting sunlight into electricity through the photovoltaic effect.

When sunlight hits the cells, it generates an electric current by exciting electrons. This generated solar energy can be used to power the house or stored for future use.

The solar tile Eternit Ondulada F-140 is also installed at the University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) and at the Atibaia manufacturing unit. At the factory, the Tégula Solar concrete tile, the company’s first solar energy tile model, has been produced since August 2021.

Eternit Solar Tile Generates up to 142.2 Wp

According to Luís Augusto Barbosa, president of Eternit, this is a revolutionary technology that is part of the company’s strategy to democratize access to solar energy from renewable sources. The expectation is that the new product will reach high market potential, as it is compatible with traditional fiber-cement tiles.

Developed since 2020, the Eternit solar tile underwent a geometric adjustment process to allow for the incorporation of photovoltaic cells. According to Luiz Lopes, manager of New Business Development at Eternit, it is important to emphasize that the weight of the tile remains practically the same, allowing installation on pre-existing structures without the need for roof modifications.

The solar tile is aesthetically wavy and slightly flat at the top of the waves, where solar cells are integrated to form a unique set, and has dimensions of 2.44 m x 1.10 m. Compared to the concrete model, whose power is 9.16 Watt-peak (Wp), the new technology has a superior power of 142.2 Wp and thus greater energy generation per solar tile.

Only 6 Tiles Can Sustain a House with Solar Energy

According to Luiz Lopes, with all this power from the Eternit solar tile, 4 to 6 tiles can already meet the energy demands of a small house. The rest of the roof can thus be made up of fiber-cement tiles.

To assess the performance and suitability of the solar tile for different client profiles, the company already has pilot projects underway in various types of properties, such as popular houses, warehouses, communities, buildings without apparent roofs, as well as commercial installations, gas stations, among others.

It is worth mentioning that in 2024, Eternit began selling its concrete solar tile Big-F10. Thus, in the face of the risk of experiencing a blackout, the material can be a good bet for Brazilians.
