Brazil went to share in the United Arab Emirates the global megatrends: dematerialization in the infrastructure sector; and electrification, with niobium technologies for lithium-ion batteries.
Representatives of CBMM, world leader in the production and marketing of niobium products, visited Masdar City during the trip, seeking opportunities for the Company's projects around the world. Focused on green solutions that have sustainability as their main characteristic, the city is located in the middle of the desert and has the goal of becoming CO2 neutral. “Minas Gerais is the world's largest producer of Niobium, which is a great ally for the innovation and competitiveness of industries. Identifying new partners and technologies in this area is of great importance for our segment”, recalls Flávio Roscoe, president of Fiemg.

Studies indicate that the use of steel microalloyed with Niobium in the construction of buildings, viaducts and bridges ensures a reduction of up to 20% in the use of natural resources and raw materials, such as steel itself, in addition to resulting in safer and more resistant projects.
“We have several examples of iconic constructions with Niobium around the world, such as the Millau bridge, the highest in the world, located in France, or the Zandhazen bridge, the longest in Europe, located in the Netherlands. In Beijing, China, the Zun Tower building, one of the tallest on the planet at 528 meters, is twice as resistant to earthquakes as a conventional building, thanks to the use of niobium microalloyed steel in its structure,” explains Leonardo Silvestre, Market Development manager at CBMM.
CBMM has more than 40 projects in partnership with universities, research institutes and companies around the world for the development of lithium-ion batteries with Niobium.
Thinking about electrification, CBMM has more than 40 projects in partnership with universities, research institutes and companies around the world for the development of lithium ion batteries with Niobium. “These batteries have exclusive ultra-fast charging characteristics, in less than 10 minutes; more stability, with less risk of explosion; and longer useful life”, explains Rogério Ribas, manager of Battery Products at CBMM.
CBMM recently announced investments in two startups to accelerate innovations in batteries with niobium technology. To Echion, startup British, is dedicated to the development of applications for the automotive sector; while Battery Streak, startup company, is focused on the use of Niobium oxide in batteries for electronic equipment and drones.
Annually, the Brazilian multinational CBMM, invests around BRL 200 million in its technology program, BRL 140 million of which is earmarked for the steel industry and BRL 60 million for batteries. With a view to diversifying its market, the company forecasts that by 2030, 25% of its revenue will be represented by products for batteries.
