Initiative for Sustainability: Thyssenkrupp Joins São Paulo in Commitment to Contain Greenhouse Gases

Thyssenkrupp, aiming to promote the ecological transition in Brazil, signed a pact with the Government of São Paulo last Tuesday (6/6) at the Palácio dos Bandeirantes: the Green Pact São Paulo. This agreement seeks to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The signing was shared with other German companies, in a ceremony attended by Germany’s Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, and the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas.

Driving Actions and Implementation of Sustainable Technology

The pact, guided by the State Secretariat for International Relations (SERI) and the State Secretariat for Infrastructure and Environment (SIMA), in partnership with the Environmental Company of the State of São Paulo (CETESB), aims to encourage companies, municipal administrations, and other São Paulo entities to voluntarily join this mission by implementing innovative solutions and technologies. Adherence implies reducing greenhouse gases in the next decade, with a renewal forecast until 2030.

Thyssenkrupp’s global commitment is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. To this end, additional goals have been established, including a reduction of approximately 30% in direct CO² emissions from production processes and energy consumption, and a 16% reduction in indirect emissions – in the company’s supply chain – by the year 2030. These targets were assessed by Science Based Targets (SBTi), which categorized them as guidelines in line with the objectives of the Paris Agreement of 2015.

Commitment to Green Transformation and Sustainability

“Considering Brazil’s potential to stand out at the forefront of environmental policies, actions like the Green Pact São Paulo are essential to unite efforts and accelerate what is already underway in a state with the economic relevance of São Paulo,” says Paulo Alvarenga, CEO of Thyssenkrupp for South America. “Thyssenkrupp continues to increasingly engage in ecological transformation through the development of sustainable technologies and the implementation of measures that minimize the environmental impact of our operations.”

In São Paulo, the corporation has two automotive plants that have achieved the Zero Landfill milestone: Thyssenkrupp Springs & Stabilizers, located in the capital, and Thyssenkrupp Metalúrgica Campo, in Campo Limpo Paulista. This indicates that these factories have implemented a series of actions that allow for the recycling or reuse of nearly 100% of the waste generated, preventing it from being sent to landfills.

These units are continually applying new measures aimed at minimizing the environmental impact of their activities. Specifically, Thyssenkrupp Metalúrgica Campo Limpo achieved the Zero Landfill milestone through the Blue Route program, which, in addition to waste management, aims to reduce water consumption, improve energy efficiency, and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions generated in the factory’s operations.

As a result of its entire sustainability strategy and efforts to reduce emissions, Thyssenkrupp has been recognized by the international organization Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) as one of the global leaders in climate protection for seven consecutive years, being among the 330 international companies in the entity’s “A List 2022” for climate protection.
