Petrobras announced new plans for the installation of the 5G connection in the Campos Basin and Santos Basin. 17 units on land will also benefit from the technology.

To make the connection viable 5G, Petrobras is installing a fiber optic network extending over 1.600 km in the Campos and Santos basins. The company has plans to enable the 5G system on 29 own production platforms and also on 17 onshore units, including refineries, ports, gas treatment units and others, by 2024.

Installations of private networks in the Campos and Santos Basins

The goal is to expand, dozens of times, the speed of data transmission, leveraging remote operations and real-time monitoring technologies in confined environments, in addition to boosting augmented and mixed reality, as well as the so-called Internet of Things (IOT). , in the acronym in English), among other advances.

The first results of the expansion of connectivity in Petrobras are already beginning to emerge with the ongoing installation of private LTE (Long Term Evolution) 4G networks, and the jump will take place in a second stage with the activation of 5G in the evolution of the LTE 4G standard. To promote data transmission coverage and make 5G operation viable in the offshore environment, the company is installing an extensive fiber optic infrastructure, which will occupy 1.600 km along the Campos and Santos basins.

The network is being installed from Praia Grande, on the coast of São Paulo. It is estimated that the works will be completed by the end of next year.

Petrobras will install 5G in 17 onshore units

On land, Petrobras plans to install 5G in 17 units under its operation, which include refineries, thermoelectric plants, Gas Treatment Units (UTGs), thermoelectric plants, ports, warehouses, corporate environments, in addition to its Research and Innovation Center (Cenpes).

With the arrival of 5G, the goal is to expand the remote control of drones and robots anywhere in the factories, both on land and at sea, as well as expanding the digitization of processes and reducing the exposure of professionals to risk. . In addition to onshore platforms and systems, Petrobras plans to extend the new technology to mobile units, such as rigs, Maintenance and Service Units (UMS) and support vessels.

With 5G, the company plans to expand process efficiency, mitigate costs, raise the level of operational security, and also obtain a greater amount of data extracted from field operations, boosting decision-making. According to data from McKinsey consultancy, the combination of 5G and LEO satellites has the potential to generate gains of up to US$ 70 billion for the global oil and gas industry in the coming years.

Other 5G features for Petrobras

At Petrobras, 5G will boost state-of-the-art innovations, such as the Internet of Things, a network of equipment and people connected to sensors, software and other technologies that already has several ongoing projects gathered at the Center of Excellence in IIOT (Industrial Internet of Things) of the company.

In this center, company specialists are dedicated to developing the various aspects of IIoT, such as industrial data governance, security, architecture and standards aimed at sensor development projects to predict equipment failures, applications for remote image monitoring, among others. .
