Petrobras Announces New Plans for 5G Connection Installation in Campos Basin and Santos Basin. 17 Onshore Units Will Also Benefit from the Technology.
To enable the 5G connection, Petrobras is installing a fiber optic network over 1,600 km long in the Campos and Santos basins. The company plans to enable the 5G system on 29 of its own production platforms and also in 17 onshore units, including refineries, ports, gas treatment units, and others, by 2024.
Installation of Private Networks in the Campos and Santos Basins
The goal is to expand the speed of data transmission by dozens of times, enhancing remote operations and real-time monitoring technologies in confined environments, as well as boosting augmented reality, mixed reality, and what is known as the Internet of Things (IoT), among other advancements.
The first results of the connectivity expansion at Petrobras are already starting to emerge with the ongoing installation of private LTE (Long Term Evolution) 4G networks, and the leap will occur in a second phase with the activation of 5G as an evolution of the LTE 4G standard. To promote data transmission coverage and enable 5G operation in the offshore environment, the company is installing an extensive fiber optic infrastructure, which will span 1,600 km in the Campos and Santos basins.

Petrobras Will Install 5G in 17 Onshore Units
Onshore, Petrobras plans to install 5G in 17 units under its operation, which include refineries, power plants, Gas Treatment Units (UTGs), power plants, warehouses, corporate environments, in addition to its Research and Innovation Center (Cenpes).
With the arrival of 5G, the objective is to expand the remote control of drones and robots anywhere within the factories, both in onshore and offshore environments, as well as to enhance the digitalization of processes and reduce the exposure of professionals to risk. In addition to platforms and systems onshore, Petrobras plans to extend the new technology to mobile units, such as drillships, Maintenance and Service Units (UMS), and support vessels.
With 5G, the company aims to improve process efficiency, mitigate costs, elevate operational safety, and also obtain a greater amount of data extracted from field operations, driving decision-making. According to data from consulting firm McKinsey, the combination of 5G and LEO satellites has the potential to generate gains of up to US$ 70 billion for the global oil and gas industry in the coming years.

At Petrobras, 5G will drive cutting-edge innovations, such as the Internet of Things, a network of connected devices and people linked to sensors, software, and other technologies that already hosts various ongoing projects gathered at the company’s Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) Center of Excellence.
At this center, company specialists are dedicated to developing various aspects of IIoT, such as industrial data governance, security, architecture, and standards aimed at developing sensor projects for failure prediction in equipment, applications for remote image monitoring, among others.
