Tornado Hits Paraná and Leaves 5 Dead and Over 430 Injured. Strong Winds Bring Down Houses and Fire Department Works on Rescues.

A massive tornado struck the state of Paraná on Friday afternoon (07/11/2025), causing five deaths and over 430 injuries.

The phenomenon, which formed over the municipality of Rio Bonito do Iguaçu, also caused damage in Guarapuava, leaving a scene described by the Fire Department as “warlike.”

The devastating natural event, marked by intense winds, hail, and heavy rains, mobilized teams from the Civil Defense and state security forces, who remain on alert and are working on search and rescue.

Tornado Hits Paraná and Devastates Entire Communities

According to the Civil Defense, about 80% of Rio Bonito do Iguaçu was destroyed. Houses were rooftops torn off, buildings collapsed, and power poles were knocked down by the force of the winds.

The municipality, which is home to approximately 14 thousand inhabitants, became practically isolated, with thousands of properties without electricity and water supply interrupted.

On Friday night, the Fire Department initially reported five deaths, a number that was adjusted to four after a review of the occurrences.

On Saturday morning (08/11/2025), a new victim was confirmed in Guarapuava, raising the total number of deaths back to five.

“Our teams reported that they found a warlike scene. We have firefighters from various regions of Paraná in the search and rescue of people. Our priority is saving lives at this moment,” said Colonel Jonas Emmanuel Benghi Pinto, Deputy Commander of the Fire Department.

Civil Defense Sets Up Field Hospital and Remains on Alert

With the large number of injured and missing persons, the Civil Defense established a field hospital in Rio Bonito do Iguaçu to assist the affected population.

According to local authorities, there is a suspicion that people may still be trapped under the rubble.

Governor Ratinho Junior reported that state government teams and security forces are mobilized to assist in rescues and in providing care for the victims.

“The Civil Defense and our security forces are on alert, mobilized, and monitoring the cities affected by the severe storms. Our solidarity goes out to the population in the affected regions. We remain in permanent attention,” Ratinho stated in an official note.

The expectation is that the governor will visit the affected areas on Saturday, accompanied by representatives from the federal government.

Winds of Up to 82 Km/h and Heavy Rains Worsen the Damage

The Meteorological System of Paraná (Simepar) confirmed that the tornado was generated by a supercell, a type of highly destructive storm.

The gusts of wind exceeded 80 km/h in some regions, causing natural disasters also in neighboring municipalities.

According to the state government, by 7 PM on Friday, 60 thousand properties were without electricity. The areas most affected were the West and Southwest of Paraná, with alarming records:

Dois Vizinhos: 82.4 km/h at 7 PM;

Cornélio Procópio: 76 km/h at 8:30 PM;

Campo Mourão: 74.2 km/h at 9:30 PM;

Candói: 73.1 km/h at 5 PM;

Planalto: 70.9 km/h at 3 PM;

Clevelândia: 68.8 km/h at 4 PM.

In addition to the force of the winds, the volume of rain exceeded 40 mm in municipalities such as Guarapuava, Candói, Pinhão, and Campo Mourão, further worsening the situation and hindering rescue efforts.

Fire Department Reinforces Operations with Air Support

Teams from various regions of Paraná, including Curitiba, were dispatched to assist in search and rescue efforts.

Ambulances and aircraft were sent to transport the injured and supplies. The Secretary of Public Security, Hudson Teixeira, confirmed the use of helicopters to reach hard-to-access areas.

The Fire Department also advised the population to avoid areas with loose wires, damaged structures, and fallen trees.

Meanwhile, Copel is working to restore power supply, and municipal teams are trying to clear streets and open access.

Tornado in Paraná Reinforces Alert About Natural Disasters

Experts from Simepar highlight that Paraná has been experiencing an increase in the frequency and intensity of natural disasters, especially phenomena such as tornados and severe storms, resulting from extreme weather conditions.

The population is advised to follow weather reports and heed the recommendations of the Civil Defense in alert situations.

With the tragedy, the state faces one of the worst climatic episodes in its recent history.

The work of reconstructing the affected areas is expected to extend over weeks, with state and federal support to ensure shelter and safety for affected families.
