USP Offers a New Opportunity for Its Academic Community with Free English Courses.

The University of São Paulo (USP) is launching a new edition of the English@USP project, offering free English courses aimed at undergraduate and graduate students as well as university staff. The courses, which aim to develop different skills in the English language, will be conducted online and will be available for enrollment between August 12 and 15, 2024. Classes will start on August 19.

Objective of English@USP

The English@USP project is an initiative of the USP Agency for National and International Academic Cooperation (Aucani), in partnership with the Pro-Rectory of Culture and University Extension (PRCEU) and the Luiz de Queiroz College of Agriculture (Esalq) of USP in Piracicaba.

The goal is to provide English language teaching focusing on four fundamental skills: reading, listening, writing, and speaking.

Each course is independent, allowing participants to choose one or more courses according to their needs and interests.

The idea is not to teach the grammar of the language but to provide techniques that help in understanding and applying English in daily life.

Details of USP English Courses

In the second semester of 2024, four courses at the beginner level will be offered, each focusing on a specific skill:

  • Focus on Reading: This course teaches how to read academic and everyday texts in English. It is ideal for those who wish to improve reading comprehension in different contexts.
  • Focus on Listening: Develops listening comprehension skills through practice with simple conversations, podcasts, and videos in English.
  • Focus on Writing: Focused on writing short academic and everyday texts. The course is aimed at those who wish to enhance their writing skills in English.
  • Focus on Speaking: This course aims to improve oral communication through practice with simple conversations and oral presentations.

Each course includes two synchronous classes per week and offers original materials produced by the project team.

In addition, students will have access to supplementary materials, weekly doubt-solving sessions, ongoing support, and extra guidance videos.

Enrollment Process and USP Criteria

Enrollment for the courses will be open from August 12 to 15. Spots are limited, and selection will be made on a first-come, first-served basis.

To enroll, it is necessary to have a USP number and not have participated in English@USP in the last 12 months.

For the Focus on Writing course, it is required to have completed the Focus on Reading or Focus on Listening.

Similarly, to participate in the Focus on Speaking, the candidate must have completed the Focus on Writing.

Soon, the English@USP project will also open enrollment for the Focus on Reading and Listening — Upper Intermediate/Advanced Levels course.

This course is aimed at those who already have an upper-intermediate or advanced level and wish to deepen their knowledge in reading and listening in English.
