Imagine an vehicle that mixes the robustness of an SUV with the casual style of a beach pickup. It seems like a summer dream, but at the SEMA Show 2024, in Las Vegas, Toyota turned this dream into reality with the launch of the Toyota 4Runner TRD Surf Concept. This concept not only resurrects the classic spirit of the original 4Runner, but also renews it with modern elements for those seeking a sporty and unique look.

In North American lands, where Toyota already boasts the popular Tacoma and Tundra pickups, a new “SUV-based pickup” may seem redundant. However, Toyota bets on the nostalgia and the emotional appeal that the Toyota 4Runner TRD Surf Concept evokes. Inspired by California and sunny beaches, the model was developed by Marty Schwerter, the head of operations at Toyota’s Motorsports Technical Center. According to him, the idea was to create something that harkened back to the first 4Runner, a version known for its rugged looks and powerful engine. Schwerter says: “We wanted something that resonated today, but paid homage to the past. The removable top was essential, just like in the original model, and we ensured it was as functional as it was stylish.”

A Project Made for the Beaches: Toyota 4Runner TRD Surf Concept

Derived from the Toyota 4Runner, the Toyota 4Runner TRD Surf Concept is a model entirely adapted for summer enjoyment. With an open bed and a tubular roll bar, it has the look of a beach pickup – that type of vehicle that seems tailor-made for cruising the American west coast, whether in California or sunny Florida.

The rear seat accommodates up to three people, providing a relaxed environment to enjoy the waves and the sunset. And, for those who do not want to be at the mercy of the weather conditions, the vehicle features a retractable roof, offering protection on rainy or windy days.

Design, Chassis, and Technical Details

Toyota 4Runner TRD Surf Concept surprises as an SUV-based pickup: a project that brings summer to the asphalt

The Toyota 4Runner TRD Surf Concept impresses with its structure: built on a shortened ladder frame chassis, the model retains the original rear suspension of the 4Runner, equipped with coil springs. This provides the concept not only with stability on varied terrains, but also a touch of lightness to tackle the road. The “SUV-based pickup” has a robust appearance and a raised height, reminiscent of off-road vehicles and promises adventure, whether on sand or asphalt.

Technology and Style at the SEMA Show 2024

The choice of the SEMA Show to unveil the Toyota 4Runner TRD Surf Concept was spot on, given that this is the event where the automotive industry showcases innovations and design concepts. For Toyota, the 4Runner TRD Surf Concept is not just another “SUV-based pickup,” but a celebration of the American outdoor lifestyle. The cool design and sporty vibe captured the audience’s attention and left one question lingering: will we ever see this model on the streets?

With the Toyota 4Runner TRD Surf Concept, the brand seems to have found the perfect mix of nostalgia and modernity, presenting a vehicle that captures the essence of the classic SUV and combines it with the laid-back style of a convertible pickup.
