The 2.0 Toyota Corolla Cross 2022 FLEX promises comfort and economy, but does it deliver more than its competitor Taos? We analyzed details and performance to answer this question. (Image: Reproduction)

The 2.0 Toyota Corolla Cross 2022 FLEX has been the talk of the town in the mid-size SUV segment in Brazil. Positioned as an aspirated model that values reliability and comfort, does it really compete on equal terms with the Volkswagen Taos, its main competitor? We analyzed every detail, from the finish to the performance, and the famous “Corolla consumption”, so you can decide if it really is all that or just fame.

The appearance of the 2.0 Toyota Corolla Cross 2022 FLEX divides opinions. The robust front and the optical set are praised, but the rear, with the exposed exhaust and some plastic details, leaves something to be desired for a car costing R$ 170 thousand. The interior finish is well assembled, but with excessive use of plastic in areas that could receive more refined materials, as in the hybrid Corolla. Positive points are the interior space and the comfort of the seats.

Technology and equipment

Toyota Corolla Cross 2.0 FLEX 2022 stands out for its durability and economy, with a 2.0 naturally aspirated engine with 177 hp and average consumption reaching 13,5 km/l on gasoline
The Toyota Corolla Cross 2.0 FLEX 2022 dashboard features an analog speedometer with a scale of up to 240 km/h, tachometer, fuel gauge and a 4,2-inch central digital screen that displays information such as average consumption, autonomy, external temperature and digital speed.

Despite having a good multimedia center with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, the model disappoints by not offering adaptive cruise control and a sunroof, common in this price range. The manual handbrake also clashes with what is expected in a modern SUV. In terms of safety, the car is well equipped, with side, curtain and knee airbags.

Engine and performance

The 2.0-liter naturally aspirated engine with 177 hp on ethanol (169 hp on gasoline) delivers a reliable and smooth ride. With a CVT gearbox that simulates 10 gears, the 2.0 Toyota Corolla Cross 2022 FLEX is efficient, but not exciting. The performance is solid, but without the “punch” of turbo engines, such as the Taos. The 0 to 100 km/h is around 9,8 seconds, enough for urban and highway use.

Corolla consumption and economy

Here, the Corolla's fuel consumption lives up to its reputation. With ethanol, the model registers averages of 7,5 km/l in the city and 9,5 km/l on the highway. With gasoline, the numbers rise to 11 km/l in the city and 13,5 km/l on the highway, demonstrating good efficiency for a 2.0 aspirated engine.

Verdict: Better than Taos or just fame?

The 2.0 Toyota Corolla Cross 2022 FLEX is an interesting choice for those who prioritize mechanical reliability and long-term economy. However, for those looking for more technology and performance, the Volkswagen Taos or even the hybrid version of the Corolla Cross are more attractive options. In the end, the Corolla Cross gains points for durability and consumption, but loses in innovation and cost-benefit.
