Working for the future every day, Equatorial Maranhão inaugurated, last Saturday, the first Electric Charging Station of the group in Maranhão, marking another stage of its Electric Mobility project. The charging station installed in Parque do Rangedor, in the capital of Maranhão, allows the population to charge up to two electric cars simultaneously for free, along with a station of 10 electric bicycles for free public use, using solar energy, clean and renewable, as one of its power sources. Additionally, an electric car was donated to the Government Secretary, which will be used for oversight and inspection of public parks.

The initiative of the Equatorial Group occurs through the Research and Development (R&D) Program of the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL) and involves investments from nine other companies in the electric sector, represented by Global Power Investments. The total investment of the project in five states of the federation is approximately US$ 19 million, with the project in Maranhão having the important partnership of the State Government.

What Is Electric Mobility and Why Did Equatorial Invest in This Project

Electric mobility is a term used to define the electrification of means of transportation, i.e., the possibility of moving through vehicles powered 100% by electric energy. The main objective of Equatorial’s Electric Mobility Project is to promote and evaluate the use of electric vehicles by the Maranhão community in the face of the current urban mobility scenario, aiming to encourage adherence and closer contact with the global trend of fleet electrification.

This way, it will contribute to the decarbonization of the environment, promoting the sustainable use of energy and fostering the reduction of environmental impacts arising from the use of fossil fuels (non-renewable energy sources that contain high amounts of carbon, used in common vehicles like gasoline and diesel).

Electric vehicles are powered exclusively by electricity and can have one or more motors, which depend on energy stored in batteries, typically lithium-ion, to function. As they do not use fossil fuels as a source, electric cars do not emit CO2 (carbon dioxide) and do not pollute the environment.

A popular electric car like the Renault ZOE model (the same model donated to the State Government) takes about 3 hours for a full charge and allows a distance of up to 250 km. Considering that each full charge consumes 52 kWh of energy, the average cost for each charge, at the conventional rate of Maranhão (US$ 0.76597 per kWh) with the addition of fees, state, and federal taxes, the average cost of a full charge would be approximately *US$ 60.00 per charge (*average value calculated for a typical residential customer). For comparative purposes, filling the gas tank of a combustion car of the same size currently costs around US$ 250.00.

The Project Aims to Promote and Encourage Electric Mobility in Maranhão

In addition to creating a sustainable transportation proposal, the project also seeks to develop technological innovations and diversify energy sources; enhance the quality of life of the community through the use of bicycles provided for leisure; and stimulate national technological advancement through the development of vehicle charging systems.

The President of Equatorial Maranhão, Sérvio Túlio, remarks that this investment will yield excellent results in Maranhão and that the distributor takes great satisfaction in pioneering this project in the state. “Aligned with the global developments and advancements within this electric mobility reality, we are certain that this project will be of great value for Maranhão, awakening the population to the future that is already happening near us. It is with great pride that we are the first company in the group to realize this project, within our social role of awakening a sustainable consciousness, which is something we have been doing since the implementation of recycling stations, ten years ago, among various other projects that have been executed. This is already a very close reality and we need to be prepared and contributing to these crucial advancements for the environment, for Maranhão, and for the people,” highlighted Sérvio Túlio.

About the Use of the Charging Station and Electric Bicycles

The partnership between Equatorial Maranhão and the State Government made it possible for the charging station to be installed in Parque do Rangedor, a public location in the capital, supported by projects from the distributor since its inauguration.

“The Equatorial Group is donating equipment to Parque Rangedor to stimulate an energy transition, in the future, which is undoubtedly a trend in the world and in Brazil, regarding the energy matrix of mobility. We believe that electric vehicles are a trend that will grow and, in Rangedor, there will be this experimentation of this future, with park management services using electric vehicles and providing electric bicycles for park visitors,” emphasized Governor Flávio Dino.

Instructions and Operating Hours of the Electric Car Charging Station in Maranhão

The charging station has two charging stations and operates during park hours, from Sunday to Sunday, from 5 AM to 11 AM and from 4 PM to 9 PM, and can be used by anyone who wishes to charge their electric car for free, on a first-come, first-served basis.

The 10 electric bicycles could be used within the park starting yesterday (20), with access provided through the “E+ Electric Mobility” app available for download in smartphone stores.

The user must register in the APP, including a credit card that will be used only for the purpose of guaranteeing the return of the bicycle. The equipment can be used for one hour, on the bike path inside the park, and the equipment must be returned within that time frame to the station.

The app is secure, and the information provided will only be used for this purpose, according to the explicit terms of use in the APP. During business hours, there will be an instructor from Equatorial Maranhão
