The Wind Farm That Was Undergoing Scheduled Maintenance Is Composed Of 30 Wind Turbines With A Total Capacity Of 150 MW.

MPI Offshore, a company providing offshore installation services owned by Van Oord, accidentally dropped three wind turbine blades into the sea last week while conducting scheduled maintenance at Vattenfall’s Ormonde wind farm in the Irish Sea off the coast of the United Kingdom.

According to the Kingfisher incident report, the MPI Offshore jack-up vessel last week docked next to the Ormonde wind turbine B01 and dropped three 61 m turbine blades weighing a total of 126 tons and a blade fastening tool weighing 3000-3100 kg into the sea.

A Video Apparently Showing The Ormonde Incident Was Shared Across Social Media. See Below:

The Wind Turbine Blades That Fell From The Vessel Were In Water Adjacent To The MPI Adventure

A notice to mariners dated October 18 stated that: “the blades that fell from the vessel were in water adjacent to the MPI Adventure near the wind turbine generator B01”, and the debris – fragments of fiberglass and part of the blade – had fractured from one blade, with the potential to wash ashore.

At the time of the report, the MPI Adventure was still on site, and measures were being taken to deploy marker buoys.

A spokesperson for Vattenfall confirmed on Friday (22) to Offshore Engineer that there was an incident at the wind farm during planned maintenance:

“An incident during planned maintenance at the Ormonde Offshore Wind Farm resulted in components falling into the sea. No one was injured, but we immediately alerted the relevant authorities and initiated a full investigation. In addition to determining what happened, our focus is on ensuring that any debris in the sea or washing ashore is cleaned up as quickly as possible.”

The Other Wind Turbines Continue To Operate Normally

Offshore Engineer understands that the other turbines continue to operate normally, but the MPI Adventure is still on site, awaiting a survey to be completed before it can leave.

The company also issued an environmental notice, asking citizens to report any discoveries of turbine debris.

“They are not dangerous, but it is best not to touch them”, it warned.

The Ormonde offshore wind farm is located in the Irish Sea, 10 kilometers from Barrow-In-Furness. The wind farm was fully commissioned in early 2012. The wind farm is composed of 30 repowered wind turbines with a total capacity of 150 MW. The turbines, each of 5 MW, cover an area of 8.7 km2.
