The Program Aims to Attract Mainly Low-Income Students, Women, and Other Minorities to the Technology Field. Applications for the Course Offered by Digital House Are Open Until July 1

A report by the Brazilian Association of Information and Communication Technology Companies (Brasscom) indicates that the information technology (IT) sector will require 420,000 professionals by 2024. To meet this demand, at least 70,000 people need to be trained annually for careers such as software development, network engineering, and data science. However, Brazil only graduates 46,000 professionals per year in this field. Attentive to this reality, Digital House, in partnership with Mercado Livre and Globant, created the Certified Tech Developer course, aimed at young people who have just completed high school and need qualifications to enter the job market.

The course was developed so that, within a period of two years, the student acquires all the necessary technical knowledge for their insertion into the technology industry job market,” explains Sebastian Mackinlay, CEO of Digital House Brazil.

Applications for the second edition of the Certified Tech Developer, whose classes start on August 9, will be open until July 1, 2021. For this edition of the program, one thousand 95% scholarships will be granted. The program aims to attract mainly low-income students, women, and other minorities to the technology field. Candidates must complete the stages of the selection process according to deadlines informed during the process. The sooner they can complete all stages, the more chances they have of being awarded one of the scholarships. The first edition of the program had over 45,000 applicants for 250 scholarships, a ratio of 180 candidates per vacancy.

The Scholarships Offered by Mercado Livre in Partnership Focus on Practice and Training for the Job Market

The CEO of Digital House emphasizes that in Latin America, there is a growing demand for profiles with technological specialization and a low percentage of young people who are trained to work in this industry, especially among the more vulnerable population. “In this sense, the Certified Tech Developer meets the urgent market demand for skilled labor and, by granting scholarships, offers low-income youth the opportunity to enter a field with a high employment rate, in addition to excellent pay, which can transform their social condition,” believes Mackinlay.

The Certified Tech Developer focuses on practice and training for the job market. According to Mackinlay, the proposal is to offer young people the possibility of entering the job market with an attractive salary without having to go through a university course. To achieve this, the program is based on teaching skills already utilized by technology companies that are market leaders. Furthermore, the inverted classroom methodology, where the student studies the theoretical part outside the classroom and uses class time for practice, provides individuals the opportunity to engage and seek solutions to real problems from the very first classes.

The course is structured so that, during the first year, the student studies intensively so that, by the end of this period, they have sufficient knowledge to immediately enter the job market. In the second year, the workload becomes less intense and more flexible so that the student can balance work and study,” highlights the executive.

Pandemic Accelerates Transformation in the Technology Sector

Between March and September 2020, the country lost 897,000 formal jobs, according to a survey by the General Registry of Employed and Unemployed (Caged) of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). Most losses occurred in the Services and Commerce sectors. A total of 181,000 sales jobs in stores and markets were lost—double the number of jobs lost in the industry. This does not account for 1.4 million domestic workers who lost their jobs during the same period, according to IBGE.

This scenario shows that, while the health crisis accelerated the so-called digital transformation, it also sped up the trend of extinguishing more mechanical functions. A report by the consulting firm McKinsey estimates that customer service workers in sectors such as Retail, Tourism, and Food, as well as support professionals in offices, will have their positions threatened with extinction by 2030. There will be 100 million fewer jobs in just the eight countries that were the focus of the consulting firm’s study.

The fact is that mechanical functions tend to be replaced by technology, and transitioning jobs or entering the job market will require more education. In this context, young people, minorities, and those with less formal education will be the most affected. “All this highlights the urgency for people to seek alternatives to maintain their employability in the post-pandemic. Given that the automation of activities is a one-way street, digital careers become one of the most viable alternatives,” believes the CEO of Digital House.
