A Line of Freight Ships in the Panama Canal That Looks More Like a Traffic Jam on the Marginal Tietê Is Causing Headaches and Impacts That Could Reverberate Even in Our Sunday Market.

The canal, which is a coveted shortcut between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, is experiencing slower traffic than BR on a holiday weekend.

The Panama Canal is no newcomer. With its 80 km length, this engineering marvel has seen a lot of water pass through. Annually, around 14,000 ships make this journey, representing 6% of global trade.

Isn’t it easy? But now, this century-old contraption is under pressure, facing technical issues, lack of space, and even the weather weighing in.

The Cradle of the Canal: A French Dream That Turned Into a Nightmare

To understand the current struggles, we need to go back in time. At the end of the 19th century, a man named Ferdinand de Lesseps, a Frenchman with more ambition than sense, set out to connect the two oceans.

But the land of Panama was no walk in the park. Nature dealt the French a tough hand, with torrential rains, diseases, and even a hill that seemed like a wall. The result? A financial fiasco and a human tragedy, with over 20,000 lives lost.

Uncle Sam Enters the Scene: The American Turnaround

It didn’t take long for the United States to get involved. With a little help from the vaccine and impressive engineering, the Americans turned the French dream into reality.

By 1914, the canal was in full swing, with giant locks and an artificial lake system that was a sight to behold. But, as with everything, the human cost of this endeavor was steep, with thousands of lives lost.

Drought: The Ghost That Haunts the Panama Canal

But the Achilles’ heel of the Panama Canal has always been water. And now, with the climate being crazier than a nightly soap opera, droughts are becoming routine. Since 2016, Panama has been facing a severe drought, with water levels plummeting.

And without water, my friend, no canal can function properly. Authorities are already on high alert, reducing the number of ships and even the weight of cargoes to avoid trouble.

In light of this scenario, the future of the Panama Canal is more uncertain than the end of a championship. If the drought continues to dominate, vessels may start looking for alternative routes, like the Arctic route, which is becoming more accessible due to melting glaciers.

And it’s not just trade that’s on shaky ground. The canal’s water is also a lifeline for over 2 million Panamanians.

Projects on Paper: The Hope for Better Days

To prevent the situation from sinking, the canal administration is brainstorming solutions. One of the ideas is to create a new water reservoir to boost the main lake.

However, like all good things, these projects are still on paper, awaiting approval and funding to get off the ground.

For now, the situation has slightly improved, with ships facing fewer delays. But the water level is still precarious, and the future of the Panama Canal remains as uncertain as the next chapter of a soap opera.

Let’s hope that this giant of engineering, which has seen so much history, can navigate through these turbulent waters and continue to be the pulsating artery of global trade.

Porque não investir na dessalinização da água do mar, para abastecer o lago de água doce?
