This site is the first confirmed colonial nesting site of titanosaurs in Brazil and the northernmost in South America. The eggs were found in the Serra da Galga Formation, from the late Cretaceous period (Maastrichtian), in a semi-arid paleoenvironment with well-developed paleosols.
The findings include multiple nests, isolated eggs, and numerous shell fragments, indicating that the dinosaurs repeatedly used the site, depositing their eggs in holes dug into the ground.
Titanosaur Eggs From Uberaba: Unique Characteristics And The Crucial Issue Of Preserved Embryos
The titanosaurs’ eggs from the Lafarge Quarry are predominantly spherical, with about 12 cm in diameter. Their shells are relatively thin (approximately 1.1 mm) and exhibit a unique porosity, with some wide pores shaped like “double funnels”, along with a nodular outer surface.
It is essential to clarify the issue of the “preserved embryos” often mentioned. The scientific publication on the Lafarge Quarry states that despite the excellent preservation of the egg shells, no embryonic remains were found in ovo at this specific site. Previous reports about the possibility of embryos in other isolated eggs from Uberaba refer to distinct and more limited findings. Other discoveries in the region include elongated dinosaur theropod eggs, enriching the collection of this city in Brazil.
