What Unicamp Plans for New Land Valued at R$ 20 Million. An Area of 44,000 m² in Campinas Will Be Dedicated to Student Housing and Integration Spaces with the Community
The State University of Campinas (Unicamp) officially announced on Monday (11) the acquisition of a new piece of land from Unicamp in Barão Geraldo, a district of Campinas (SP), for R$ 20 million. With 44,000 square meters, the area will be designated for the construction of student housing and cultural, sports, and administrative spaces.
According to the institution, half of the land will house residential complexes with capacity for more than 1,400 students, raising the total availability to around 2,400 spots in the university housing program. The project aims to enhance student retention and bring the university closer to the local community.
Planned Structure for the Land
In addition to the residences, the new piece of land from Unicamp will feature a dining hall, community garden, theater space, soccer field, and areas for cultural and extension activities. The other half of the space will accommodate administrative sectors and support environments for academic activities.

According to the general coordinator of Unicamp, Professor Fernando Coelho, the proposal goes beyond housing. “It’s not just about accommodation, but about creating a space that will enable interaction between the university and the city,” he stated.
Target Audience and Impact on Student Retention
The Unicamp housing program currently serves around 1,000 students, across 226 residences and 27 studios. It is primarily aimed at low-income students who live outside the Campinas Metropolitan Area. With the delivery of the new piece of land from Unicamp, it will be possible to reduce the waiting list and offer better conditions for those facing difficulties in accessing housing.
The Deape (Executive Board of Support and Student Retention) also provides housing assistance scholarships for students who cannot find a spot in the residences or study at the Limeira and Piracicaba campuses.
Students’ Expectations
The purchase was celebrated by the Central Directory of Students (DCE) as a victory in the struggle for student retention. However, student leaders emphasize that the demand for housing extends to other cities where Unicamp offers courses. “We want the expansion of this benefit to Limeira and Piracicaba,” said Laura Khaddou, general coordinator of the DCE.
Next Steps
There is currently no official deadline for the start of construction, but the university has already confirmed that the architectural project will be developed in the coming months. The expectation is that execution will take place in phases, prioritizing housing so that the increase in capacity is felt quickly.
Do you think the investment in the new piece of land from Unicamp will solve the housing demand? Or does the university need to expand the program to other cities? Leave your opinion in the comments.
